I had this idea that The Eyre Affair would have illustrations within the pages much like a thirties adventure book, and Maggy Roberts and I came up with seven or eight ideas.
My publishers liked them but didn't think it right on a debut novel - although I wangled in a few adverts right at the end, but only the UK edition.
For Lost in a Good Book I tried again to have the illustrations included, but to no avail. However, we did get a frontispiece for the UK edition in black and white and colour for the US edition. The US copies of the book have never carried any adverts at the end.
