Apology to Charles

<HTML>Doing the TEA Notes obviously necessitated a close reading of the text, and while so doing I discovered that I had been wrong to insist (in an earlier thread) that there was no direct parody or pastiche in it. In fact, much of Thursday's time in JE, especially the conversations between Thursday and Rochester, are a (very good) pastiche of Charlotte Bronte's style; even Thursday slips into Bronte-speak. It escaped my notice on earlier readings a) because I read too fast, and b) because Charlotte's style is so understated, it could easily get overlooked.

So Charles was right and I was wrong. Sackcloth and ashes.</HTML>
