Two Towers gossip from NZ

<HTML>Just heard from a friend in Christchurch, and thought you'd find her comments amusing:

We've been to the movies three times in the last week, LOTR 2T on
Monday, Harry Potter II on Wednesday lunchtime, and then LOTR 2T again
on Saturday when our mate who was in the movie asked us to go with
him.
That's close to nine hours worth of screening.. oh my aching bum ;-)

(snipped out stuff about HP)

Okay - LOTR 2T. Awesome movie! I'm rapt they stopped carving up bits
of NZ to splice together into supposedly the one scene - it didn't
look right. With very few exceptions, what you see on the screen in
2T is something you can actually come and see in NZ, unlike bits of
FOTR where (for example) the foreground is Lake Manapouri, the middle
is the Arthur's Pass high country and the background is Mitre Peak.
Three locations in one scene is a bit jarring ;-)

The story is quite a bit different from the book, but that's okay.
Made it interesting to not instantly know what was coming next. I'm
stoked they kept the Ents in, and can't wait to see the final
installment where no doubt we'll see Shelob (my favourite character).

Golum will make the hairs stand up on your neck..

Okay, time for the goss ;-)

Dave is in many parts in 2T, and in even more in the last movie. One
of the bits he is spottable in is where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli
hail the Riders of Rodan, who wheel and surround them and much male
machismo mouthing off happens. Dave is one of the riders at the back,
who, when they wheel, becomes one of the front riders and can be seen
in the ring of hostile faces around our heroes. Look for the slender
bearded guy in heavy armour on a black horse. (He appears in the
hillside charge at the end of the movie on a chestnut with long white
stockings)

Anyway, that scene where they wheel and confront took two and a half
days to film, partly because they wanted Legolas to twirl the arrow as
he notched it into his bow, and partly because they wanted the riders
to wheel in perfect formation. Dave is gobsmacked that after all that
(and they did get both bits perfect in the end), these "crucial" bits
were dropped.

During those 2 1/2 days of filming that bit, the actors and extras
grew quite chummy, with Legolas's "skirt" being lifted by many a
jesting spear when the camera wasn't focused on him. The actor
concerned has quite a healthy sense of humour, according to Dave, and
enjoyed a laugh to break the tension.

But the really GOOD bit of goss is this... the (delicious) actor who
plays Aragorn (Vittorio Mortenson?) was always keen to interact with
the Kiwis (NZ'ers) on-set, and spoke extremely fluent English...

Except when the director or similar wanted to critique his performance
or pronunciation. As soon as Vittorio saw them coming with script in
hand, he would revert back to "me no speaka da Englese" and require
several yabbering sessions with his translators and agents, involving
much wringing of hands and theatrical moans about his creativity being
ruthlessly trampled. Finally the film bosses would depart again, and
Vittorio would recline back against the rock, grin at Dave and say
"Where were we? Oh yeah.. last Friday I was fly-fishing in a great
stream just a few kilometres out of Arrowtown.."

All the guys who played the hobbits were loved by the extras, who said
they had no "side" on them at all (airs and graces). Most of the cast
were happy to mix in with the locals, on-set and off, except for
whatsername who plays Anwyn/Evening star. Crew not sure if she's
incredibly shy or snooty, but she didn't like being in NZ much at all
and wasn't afraid to show it. Seems she's a New York kinda gal.

"Shadowfax" (Uraeus, the gorgeous grey stallion) is (sometimes)
controlled by fishing line instead of reins, and Gandalf most
certainly has a saddle under his robes.

Dave said the three months he spent as a riding extra in LOTR was so
fantastic, he'd drop everything if he was ever offered a similar role
again.</HTML>

<HTML>I'm still impressed that they managed to find so many Ole Gunnar Solskaer lookalikes to play hobbits....</HTML>

This is the work of an Italian narco-anarchic collective. Don't bother insulting them, they can't read English anyway.
