where is chpt 13?

I have the US addition and I am missing Chapter 13 even though it is listed in the table of contents. Am I the only one?

Yes, you are. I believe you have inadvertently received the lone defective copy that was accidentally printed with a missing chapter. Pity, it was the best one.

Did it make sense without it? The bit where he killed the giant was pivotal, as well as hilarious.

Oh, and the part when the mutant earthworm swallows the ... oh, no, that would be giving too much away.

Edited for excessive spoilage.

I hope that the same doesn't happen when you buy the other books.

Sometimes I wish people would use the 'search' function on this fforum more often...

Is it me, or has there happened to be a severe outbreak of "missing chapter 13"-ness here at the moment? Hmm...

[Megs proceeds to hand out commonsense instead of cake as previously suggested by Nicky]

It does seem to have taken the place of the movie threads in popularity, for the moment.

And while we're about it, can someone PLEASE tell me how far the dodo walked into the Forest of Dean?

And who was Dean anyway?

The thing is, you should be able to spot that it is deliberate... in the contents the chapter 13s are the only ones that start on an even page number and are also only 1 page long.

Thank you all for your help. I am so glad that we figured out that I have the only defective copy. Maybe I should try to auction it on eBay!

That part about the Giants and Earthworms makes so much more sense in Chapter 14 now.

I wonder why people would want me to use the search function or to pay attention to the odd versus even page start. That seems like such hard work and seems like something for sophisticated readers...this way I found out what happened without having to read a whole page of a book...

thx!

I'm sorry, love, I couldn't resist it. The truth of the matter is that none of the estimable Mr Fforde's books have a chapter 13, though one is always listed. The chapter titles are locations around where they live, I believe. But as subtly hinted above, the search function will help with this one.

Perhaps one day he'll write a book with all chapter 13's.

Thx. I really enjoyed everyone's answers and am thinking of posting another question to get everyone riled up.

I read the Eyre Affair when it first came out but didn't remember it missing 13.

Oh well. I now have some lovely, new, smart friends.

Stick around then. We're always happy to hang out with someone who thinks we're smart. :-)

And if you're lucky, you might even end up with some cake instead of commonsense.

Alas, we're all out. Perhaps this miniature solid gold dodo will keep you amused until we find some.

I guess it depends on how sociable we're being.

Here's a question: Why do you log in as MartinB on the Nextian chat forum, but post on the book forums as MartinBentley without logging in?

Dunno. Happened that I didn't feel like logging in I think.

It is me though....

It was almost at the same time, though:

Definately obsessive....

I was remembered on one forum but not the other I think. Or I had to log in on one but not the other.

I forget now. I do that a lot. Especially in exams. Which I have to pass well.

Tis the pressure.
