Is there any consensus about what a 'cock-horse' is or, more intriguingly, why you would ride one to Banbury Cross to look at a lady with rings on her fingers and bells on her toes?

I believe a cock-horse is generally taken to be a hobby-horse, ie a stick with a horse's head for young children to "ride".

I've a book at home which tells the origins of this one but for the life of me I can't remember what it is or where it is!

So annoying!

Did anybody else have the song Sweet Gypsy Rose go through their mind when reading this topic? I can't seem to get those few lines out of my head now. Dang nabbit.
