Hi ffordefan,

come to the darkside and join us in Nextian Chat. We have a thread (slightly doemant at the moment) dedicated to semaphore, binary, morse and the like.

By the way your first version is correct even though the second is easier to read if you do not use an automatic translation program. (Binary has no spaces).

Actually, with the binary system, conceivably all words in any language could be converted to a unique binary code. Then with one key word at the start, to identify the language being translated, the binary sequence could be interpreted to mean any sequence of words in that language.

EXAMPLE : English to Binary

English binary value
The 11011 27
Fourth 10001 17
Bear 01110 14

In German "The Fourth Bear" could be a different set of binary sequences, but would be unique to German. You would then need only a binary to XXX language dictionary. Of course, more bits can be used as needed.

I am not sure I understand your point, but if you mean that the same binary notation is used to represent, for example, "bear" in English, "bär" in German and "ours" in French, then unfortunately it would only work if the languages also shared the same grammatical construction.

You will even fall down with the word "the", where most languages use multiple different words, but English only has one.

If I have misunderstood you, please forgive me, but also explain in a little more detail.

Welcome to the Fforum, by the way! Refreshments are available in Nextian Chat

I think the point is that binary is really just a set of characters (two of them) that could be used to encode anything, in many different ways. There exist a number of commonly-used coding systems for the English alphabet, including ASCII, but no one of them IS binary.
