Martlet

As a newbie I was reading the crib and came across the Martlet (LIAGB p89) offer of a t-shirt. I have enough t-shirts but was intrigued as I couldn't work out the reference and a search here didn't resolve anything.
Is there anything in the back-forum about this, or anyone any idea?
The best I could come up with was that Joe Martlet belonged to the Welsh HARP project, but that doesn't stand up too well, presumably because he doesn't have any feet.

I can remember spending ages searching for an answer, but can't remember for the life of me whether I was successful. Isn't that always the way?

We did find the answer, but I don't believe anybody got a T-shirt. Googling for martlet+jasper fforde ought to give you a clue ...

Shame; how boring.

I was fascinated years ago by the HARP project (which seemed so close to success), and then the conspiracy theorists got such a revival when the Iraqi supergun hove into view and the designer got shot by the Israelis/French/Iraqis/CIA/Mafia/International Brotherhood of Masons (ring one).

The Welsh were about the only ones I've not seen accused so far, and I was hoping JF had managed to pull them into it. Come on, JF, I'm sure you could if you tried.

BTW, any readers interested in wierdness in Wales; I can recommend "Aberystwyth mon amour". Nothing like the real Wales, of course, but then what is?

I found 2 Shakespearean martlet (bird) references--in Macbeth and Merchant of Venice. You can search for them at bartleby.com. Not sure how either of them might be connected with Joe.

Mike Calder

Yes "Aberystwyth mon amour" is a bit odd. I've never been there so I don't know if any of the places are real. They sound as if they should be.

Me too - also a newbie and intrigued by the martlet question. As far as I can find out, a martlet is a bird with no feet, also called a merlette, a martinet or a martin and is used in heraldry to signify a fourth son. Don't know if that helps any.

Looking at Jon's hint above, I found
[www.martlet-online.com]

Apologies if I have posted multiple times, first post seemed to go, but I noticed when back later it wasn't there.

I have tried finding this many times, I found something that Martlet means fourth son, but other than that...
