It was established in Another Place (that we can't get to at the minute) that the serial henchmen of Acheron known as Felixes were named for Felix Topolski, artist and illustrator and friend of Jasper's grandfather.

A little googling reveals that Topolski was well named, being a top drawer; see

for more info and pics.

Jasper’s grandfather Joseph Retinger is even more interesting - see

for a quick precis of his life, career, and relationship with Conrad.

Notes to amend!

Ooh, yeah - the notes. Do they mention that the current repository of 'Jane Eyre' (original manuscript, as far as I can tell, is the British Library, and it's on display at the page where they get it on, so to speak? For those with a copy to hand the page you can read in the original handwriting begins with 'His face was very much agitated and very much flushed....' and ends 'and if I had loved him less'.

I've now got it on a postcard - hence being able to quote.

The notes do indeed mention the permanent location of the ms. .... d'you think I'd overlook summat obvious like that? But AFAIK the page at which it is opened is changed regularly.

I saw it as Thursday (and I think JFf did) when it was on loan to Haworth Parsonage. Pretty damn impressive, that was. I had to suppress the urge to genuflect.

I'm not entirely sure it is changed that often, as the postcard matches the current page. I could be wrong, of course.

Alrighty then. Anyone wanting to see a Stellar Sea Cow should bugger off to the Natural History Museum... I don't actually go round London specifically chasing references, btw...

I realised I was reading Shakespeare put loud without thinking about it too...

Anyone wanting to see a *Stellar* Sea Cow should try creating their own constellations. *Steller's* Sea Cows may well be in the NHM.

And when you were reading Shaxper out loud, did you do all the actions as well (and if you did I hope you weren't doing Lear's speech on the heath ... 'blow winds, and crack your cheeks ...')

Sonnets, thankfully...

And any action as a result of reading sonnets was unrecorded by history. Hence no idea who the dark lady was, unless she was that one from the Galaxy adverts...

And as for the old Sea Cow chesnut - I think the authentic spelling shortly before it went extinct was in fact "dinner".

there is actually a book that invents a possibility of who the dark lady is.
they say that she was actuually one of shakespeares lovers (whether it is true or not is up to you to decide.

There are hundreds of books claiming to identify the 'Dark Lady', but frankly there's no way of ever telling. Some of the theories can be ruled out on the basis of lunacy, but others seem pretty convincing in their own way. I personally swing towards the Dark Lady being a literary fiction of the ideal woman, and can't understand why people need her to be 'real' so badly. It's as absurd as demanding to know who Jane Eyre really was.

btw, do cats like Felix like Felix? I think we need to be told.

and on a random note that doesn't belong here, my new student union card has two Grocers' Apostrophe's on it. Shocking.
