Every body needs another place to waste their time. And this place may waste more than most...

Us? Waste time? Nah, that's just a vicious rumour...

Hello John! Welcome to the insanity.

Entire Fforum: "For a given value of insanity!"

Yup, we're nuts.

Entire Ffurm: "For a given value of nuts!"

Like I said, crazy.

Entire Fforum: "For a given--"

Alright! Hush already!

Thank you, and hello. In an effort to tie this thread back in to the original topic, I hereby announce that my housemate, who's currently doing a PhD in 19th-century detective fiction, read 'The Eyre Affair' at my urging a couple of weeks ago, and was delighted to have his copy signed by Jasper this past weekend. I don't know that it'll enter into his thesis, though.

Don't see why not...

In a determined effort to keep with fforum ettiquette I want to go back off topic. Am I right in thinking the Great Library of Alexandria burnt down? They've built a new one at long last that opened quite recently. So, guess what I saw a photo of in the Grauniad today? (clue - it involves smoke, flames and a building full of books)

Will they ever learn?

It is said that the library was originally burnt because all the books in it either agreed with the Koran, and so were irrelevant, or disagreed with it, and were blasphemous.

Anybody sees Pat Robertson outside the Library of Congress with box of matches, the number to call is 911.

Interesting use of logic there. It works, but...

In that case, why does the Vatican have the world's best collection (allegedly) of books that should not be seen - ever - by anyone? Surely they aren't biblical (except in certain, very specific, ways), which only leaves relevancy as an excuse. But what could the church find relevant in hardcore porn? I'm sure a more priestly mind than mine can squeeze something choir-boy related in here.

And is it true that Dubya has recently been seen borrowing books from the Library of Congress? Do we think he'll bring them back as soon as he discovers that Gerald "There is no Soviet dominance of Eastern Europe" Ford had already coloured in all the pictures?

(Ooh! Politics and religion in one post - surely this'll get them flaming!)

My paternal grandmother went to high school with Gerry Ford, oddly enough.

What's so odd about that? Presumably SOMEBODY had to do so. After all just about everybody goes to school with other people, so some must go to school with people eho later become famous in one line or another... If she hadn't gone to school with him maybe she'd have gone to school with somebody else who'd be mentioned in the fforum, and then maybe you'd have seen THAT situation as being "strangely enough" instead... Many so-called "coincidences" are just chance events to which people assign more significance than they deserve. Now if ALL of your grandparents had gone to school with different Presidents-to-be, THAT would have been strange...

I think what Magda meant was that Gerald 'chewing gum' Ford was an odd person when at high school ....

My brother went to school with Steve Coogan. I went to school with Martin Allcock of Fairport Convention and Clint Boon of the Inspiral Carpets. PG Wodehouse went to the same school (Dulwich College) as Raymond Chandler.

Many British prime ministers went to the same school. That isn't a coincidence, though.

I had 2 roomies who worked at the White House under Bush I. Does that make me special?<GRIN> Actually, one was an intern from Little Rock, Arkansas and was her letter of recommendation came from Hilary Rodham Clinton herself!(even though Hil's a Dem' and my roomie is a 'Pub)

My other roomie was the one who typed all the speeches and put them into the teleprompter for POTUS (President of the United States, for those non-insider types LOL)

Oh, and my taxi was lucky enough to get past Bush I's motorcade on my way to the airport! He wasn't prez yet, but had just been recently elected. I've also been to the White House Christmas party and got a special tour of the Oval Office. [now I'm just bragging!]

But seriously, overall, I hate politics and really have issues with Bush II. Good thing he has a competant(?) staff that keeps things going, even if I don't always agree with them. I think the biggest thing about Bush II that pisses me off is that he invokes God all the time - whatever happened to separation of church and state!? - and his Texas accent gets under my skin and just makes me SEETHE! (not that I have anything against Texans in general, but it just seems that the majority of famous ones are such a$$holes and their accent just proves the point to me!)

oh my, did I just say all that? just ignore me...my government does....

lol

You mean British Prime Ministers go to school? I thought that was discouraged nowadays? Can't have them knwoing how most of us live and all, or getting an education or anything. That'd be dangerous.

Maybe they should build a Library not actually at Alexandria, and put no real books in it. Then see what happens. That'll confuse Fate...

Not sure how competent Bomber Rumsfeld is - I think he thinks diplomacy is some kind of certificate from high school. I've got a soft spot for Colin Powell, if only because he can't say his name right.

My current question about politics is since when was international policy decided by which nation the Simpson's threw the best insults at?

My suggestion for Alexandria - a mobile Library! That way it'd be able to run itself down to the fire station in the event of combustion, plus as a bonus the books within would be a lot more freely available to the public.

There'd be an awful lot of Virginia Andrews in there, though. Not sure where she stands in relation to the Qu'ran.

Slightly to the left, possibly.

Why don't mobile libraries play tunes like ice cream vans?

Well, surely they would only do that if they ran out of books...?

I now have visions of a mobile library with a window counter and an enormous illuminated plastic book on top. "Mr Scrippy", they'd call it. Thank you so very, very much.

I also want to know which university and what's the name of the course? Sounds interesting. I wonder if borrowings of Jane Eyre and other books mentioned, plus books on the Crimean war had a corresponding boom (or maybe video rentals for those slackers who watch the movie instead of reading*)

*Often leading to a poorer understanding of the plot and main themes, famously demonstrated by the character George Constanza in Seinfeld who watches the vid of Breakfast at Tiffany's instead of reading it for his bookclub (the vid overrated in my opinion cf the novella but thats another story) and draws an important but wrong conclusion which he reveals in his book club participation. Anyone know what Im on about here??
