Missing Chapter 13?
Posted by: Anonymous User (---.proxy.aol.com)

I came upon this quite by accident, but I noticed that The Eyre Affair is lacking a thirteenth chapter. I thought it might be due to some weird superstition, but there is one listed in the index.
Does anyone know what the deal is with this chapter?

It is the same with all the books, each is listed with a name, but does not exist... It's a kind-of... joke...

Yeah, this got me at first as well. It's a shame, because they looked like they had interesting titles - not that I thought anything was missing, because the plot still made sense.

(Don't know if that post did though...)

I did comment on this on the main fforum. I asked Jasper originally when I first noticed it for LIAGB, and suggested that JurisFiction may have Boojumed it for some reason. He said his JurisFiction contacts "refused to comment".

Note that the Swindon photo gallery is also missing a 13th plate.

The reason why chapter 13 might be missing is because a character that was crutial to chapter 13 has been removed using the Prose Portal.

There is a superstition that books don't ever have exactly 13 chapters, but usually Chapter 13 does exist; it's just not the last. Same thing with buildings.

I didn't realize that the chapter was missing until I read this. But why eliminate a chapter, Why? The titles do seem interesting. Thank you all for pointing this out, I would have never realized and gone on living in blissful ignorance.

I didn't realize that either until you said something.

This isn't the first place that I've seen an author delete a chapter. Christopher Moore also delete a chapter in "The Stupidest Angel" but I think his was just to be silly and his is some random number like 23 or 27 and makes his blatently obvious.

Hi everybody,
I also came across the missing chapter by accident, and I needed an explanation. So, here is mine:

In the table of contents, chapter 13 is called "L'église à Capel-y-ffin" (sorry, I have the French Version) and the translator adds a footnote which explains that this site means a borderline chappel not far from the ancient frontier dividing England from Wales. By the way, is there such a footnote in the English version? Anyway, I like to think that the missing chapter functions as a graphic borderline in the novel, even though it is olny in chapter 15 that we actually enter Wales.

If you think this is a pertinent reading, what is the borderline for?

MuseSusan refered to the 13th floor of buildings.

In Oz we have a Ground floor and then number the next as 1.
(I mention this because I've heard that it's different elsewhere.)

Thus we have the awkward situation where a 12 floor building would actually have 13 storeys and a 14 storey building would have 13 floors!

I'm so confused by this real world, that a missing 13th chapter in post-modern, allegorial humour** is likely to tip me over the edge....

but probably not the edge of the 13th floor.

Cheers from Wagga Wagga.

I cam across this instantly. I just noticed a few seconds ago. I'm new to Fforde! I noticed it not because of the jump to chapter 14 but because of the black page before it. I thought it was weird because throughout the book the next chapter always starts on the next page and not forcefully on the right page like some other books do.

I looked back trying to see if other chapters fell on the right page but chapter 12 started on the left one and thats when i noticed. Where is Chapter 13?

Actually, it is 13 that's missing-
the exact chapter heading reads:

"For Luck, There Is No Chapter 13.
JUST THIS CHRISTMAS PHOTO ALBUM"
- TSA

Sorry, the fruitbat in exile had to chime in to clarify-
I would have put this here years ago if I'd seen it before...

Now I'm wondering about the meaning of the missing chapter title in TN6...
