Whats up with Chapter 13?

Ok, so I am reading the Eyre Affair and low and behold I finish chapter 12 and there is a blank page then starts chapter 14. So I look in the table of contents and there is a chapter 13 called The Church at Capel-y-ffin. It is supposed to be a one-page chapter on page 142, page 142 is blank. So I call Barnes & Noble. The girl checks and all their copies have a blank page 142 (hense no chapter 13). She then proceeds to check all his other books and none of them have a chapter 13. In some of the table of contents it lists Chapter 13 as "the last page of chapter 12" with a title for the chapter that has some reference to a church and nothing to do with the page or the book.

Help, what is going on does he not like "13"?

Cindy

Well, that about sums it up. I seem to remember a dicussion we had here if there was any conjection between the titles of these imaginary chapters, but got to no stringent conclusion.

Welcome around, btw. If you like, take a walk around the corner to the Nextian Chat forum. That's where most of us hang out and have a bit of tea and cake.

I checked that when I read this...its weird. It's also like that in The Big Over Easy, so one can only assume its also in The Fourth Bear, I don't know I smell a trend...whatever Jasper is still a genius despite the missing chapters.

Yes it is an amazing book, and I think it makes the author that much more interesting to know that he leaves the chapter 13 out of all his books. I think I would be dissappointed now if he wrote one with it included, lol!!

I have a feeling he will eventually go somewhere with that, probably in the Thursday Next series. He has said before that he often leaves himself small threads that can be worked into some future plot, and it seems likely that one of Thursday's future meta-textual adventures will somehow explain why her life lacks Chapter 13's.

I like the idea of a book consisting of nothing but the missing chapters from all the other books. It would be brilliant if it was 13 chapters of Chapter 13. But we'd have a long wait ahead of us.

Aw, she was probably thrilled to have a mystery on hand and if she wasn't interested she wouldn't have looked at his other books as well. More than likely the most thrilling thing to have happened all day at the bookstore.

How much do you wanna bet that she started reading one of the books after all that research?

JF does address this issue on the website in the FAQs. He muses that he is, in fact, leaving the equivalent of a paved road into a field or something like that. It's one of the ways he likes to play.

OMG - I cannot believe I missed that. No seriously. I did not realise that ANY of the books had a non-existent chapter 13.

I am so ashamed. I am going to cry now.

Don't cry! Here, have some cake! If it's any consolation, I was completely oblivious to the whole issue as well, until I first came to the fforum.

Hey guys!!

I was talking about this with a couple of friends as we have just read TEA and we were all mystifyed to see that there was a missing chapter in all of our books and we came to the conclusion that it could be that that chapter was stolen out of the book by hades! whether or not this is right or not i don't know but i havn't read any of his other books yet so i didn't realise that it was like that in all of them!! now i'm lost!! lol!

Chapter 13 did not conform to Goliath Corporation standards.

You may have a copy from the infamous "Oolorororororo-who-you" print run where Native Australians held the vital chapters to ransom. It completely ruined "The Da Vinci Code" and made the final Harry Potter book unreadable.
