Lost in Austen?

Really sorry if this is old news or has already been discussed to death (I did a quick search of topic titles and nothing jumped out at me), but I have to get this off my chest...

Surely there's some kind of copyright infringement happening here? I mean... blimey!

"...Amanda Price - the frustrated romantic who lives for reading and adores the characters in her Jane Austen books. Then one day she discovers a gateway in her flat and ends up being transported to her favourite world, the world of Pride and Prejudice..."

If not by Jasper, then perhaps the makers of Goodbye Sweetheart?

Very interesting.
I wonder if the men with thin watches are checking out the possible infringements of copyright.

Hello all!
Just saw the advert on ITV for this show and immediately something went ping in my head. So naturally I dove into the mighty Jaspers site to see if anyone else had noticed. Which they had. Do you think somebody should slip an email to him or his agent? I mean seriously this is cutting pretty close even from the brief advert.

Welcome Bunnyfrog help yourself to pie.

I suspect that Lost in Austen will owe a certain debt to our man and other authors who have had characters jump into books/poems/films.

It does look *very* similar, doesn't it? In fairness, as far as I can tell from the Radio Times article the protagonist here actually *becomes* Elizabeth Bennet when she's inside the book - like there's an exchange of characters rather than just book-jumping. And obviously there's no dodos, airships, literature police etc. It's kind of like "The Eyre Affair" for the Dick & Dom generation. Depends where they go with it, but it's probably dissimilar enough that they could get away with it.

Be interesting to see how they portray the fictionals. I'm kind of looking forward to it.

Not long to go now, eh? In fact, it's on Thursday Next...

...woops. Edit: My mistake, it's Wednesday Next. Still, don't let's let the facts get in the way of a joke.

SM: shurely shome mishtake? We may have discussed other past events at the Ffiesta, but as Mrs Lush and I are now focussing our attention on emigrating to New Zealand next year, we're not working on any future events. Not in an organising capacity, anyway. We'll be going to ArmadaCon as punters.

Sorry: my mistake! I thought that you were planning another one.

Good luck with the move to New Zealand. As mrs. Skidmarks is from NZ we intend to visit at some point.

....So what did everyone think? Wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, and I do love Hugh Bonneville as Mr Bennett. I kept expecting the Cheshire Cat to pop up at some point and explain it all to the new girl though!

Good enough that I intend to watch again next week. Mr Bennet and Darcy are both good. Mrs Bennet's surprisingly good as well - I can't help but think of Alex Kingston as purring middle-aged totty, wasn't expecting her to get the shrieking right.

Shame they had to stick on a "Next Time" trailer, though. The thought that the modern-day character might accidentally kill off one of her fictional heroes with the best intention of putting the story right was pretty daring, for the two seconds that it lasted.

I was prepared to hate it, I didn't like the main character but Alex Kingston was superb, and Hugh Bonneville was much better suited to this than Bonekickers.

Adrian - at least they used "Next" time, pity it's not on Thursday, I missed the trailer as the timer switched to record another programme.

A bit of searching reveals that the idea apparently came from the producer Damien Timmer, not the writer (Guy Andrews). Haven't been able to determine yet what inspired the idea or whether Mr. Timmer is a Fforde fan.

It's deja vu all over again...

I think this is the first step towards making P&P a reality book show - now we know for certain why the CofG authorised the third refit and upgraded the conduits.

Everything looks tidyneat & repairified - well done Isambard, Sid and the team!

I wonder if that door between worlds also leads to the Core Containment Room?

Hi apj welcome to the Fforum. Hot pies are available.

Wait a little while and there will be cold if that is your preference.

I watched the first ep and will probably/possibly watch the second. The guy from Bonekickers was the least worst thing in that and so I wasn't surprised that he suited this one.

To be fair, I seem to recall a Tom Holt book that had a similar theme too. Perhaps an idea who's time has come (and not just to one brain).

Yep I was thinking that, Kitten - ideas do seem to propagate fairly widely...

There is also Inkheart and its sequels which is a vaguely similiar idea.
