10 Literary Classics to Turn Into Summer Blockbusters

I saw this [blog.spout.com] and wondered if anyone here had ideas for new films from old novels?

John Crowley's Little Big perhaps? Not as old as the ones from your link though. Is there a definition to "old"?

Were any of Herman Hesse's works filmed?

I must admit, I was surprised when Patrick Suskind's Perfume was made. That book is one of the few I cannot re-read. I'm giving it a few more years, but perhaps it is more of a once-best-read.

Surely most unlikely film to be made was The Unbearable Lightness of Being - book with no discernible plot and obscure narrative. Should add, have never seen film.

Would love to see Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell as has plots in abundance.

Even though Steve Coogan ducked the task somewhat, how about a proper version of "Tristram Shandy", perhaps in a double bill with "Ulysses" by James Joyce?

I was disappointed with Tristram Shandy to be honest. I never read the book though, so perhaps I'll add that to my list of books to read when I have time.

You don't have the time trust me! And the film was about the making of the film of the book rather than about the book. The book is unfilmable. I am convinced.

James Blish: Cities in Flight. So epic it could never be filmed.

I'd rather see Strange & Norrell a miniseries. That way they can take their time with it.

You know, I had never read Children of Men but I took it out from the library this week. The film was incredibly different. I like it when that happens.

At Swim Two Birds

How about the telephone directory? Good cast but plot is woeful, as it is about an epidemic of people trying to get an answer from directory enquiries.

Aliens eventally land on the deserted planet and try and induce an answer as to why all these bipeds had plastic items held to their ears,m and why bells are ringing.

they leave no wiser than they came but with headaches.

You could try converting the Works of Jung into a summer blockbuster. Why? Because it's there! The only rider would be the required casting of Ewan McGregor as absolutely everyone.

Egon.

Have you been reading Jung because you want Ewan McGregor to play his own Mother, or do you want Ewan McGregor to play his own mother because you have been reading Jung?

I'm with Egon. Not just because I'll take any excuse to stare for a prolonged length of time at Ewan McGregor.

I liked the Ewan McGregor/rider pun, but am not sure that he is still too Jung?

Perhaps Peter Fonda is a better rider? If that is too easy a choice of rlder, Nicholas Cage and if you wii accept a ghost rider then Steve McQueen?

Ewan isn't too bad on the eyes...

Something's wrong. Why hasn't there been a food reference yet? I demand a return to normal service!
