I would say both sets of spellings are valid as we diverged from a common root. Surely it's okay for an entirely different country to develop its language differently from us.

Banana hammock.

When living in Angleterra* I heard a citizen of the Us of A state loudly that they still spoke the language of King George (the Third) to which a cultured English voice replied:' Yes, but English and the world have moved on two centuries since then."

Stone cold silence ensued.

* I was going to write 'Allemange" but thought the 'mange' bit might be construed as a slight against the English.

...and a bit close to "Allemagne", perhaps?

I would have thought that that was a reference to "blancmange", rather than ahything sinister.

Living in Oz is about as close to Allemagne as I care to get these days.

Just watched part of '49up' and the general picture of London is that it is not worth going to see again. May be a bit extreme but I have heard no favourable comments on living in London for about ten years now.

As someone said on 'Good News Week' that although the Poms won more medals than Oz at the Olympics they had to go back to UK whereas our athletes were coming back here.

Must try and persuade better half that spending $20000 on trip around world and into UK is better value than building new house. Will try chocolate and champagne method first.

London isn't in the UK. Has no one an incorrect knowledge of Geography anymore?

Please advise, with some urgency, new location of London, as Mr Geg has just gone there without passport.
Also will Oyster Card still be valid?

London now officially located a little south of Rome. Oysters may be more valid than Oyster Cards at this point.

Is relieved Mr Geg took, what seemed at the the time, the unnecessary precaution of taking rubber dinghy on trip to Notting Hill.
Considers he is now unlikely to be back in time for tea and returns fatted calf to butchers. Stops at off license for large bottle of Gin.

Obviously Geg is from the southern part of Watford or would have needed a passport to vist London anyway.

Confesses to living ever so slightly North of Watford but points to nearby tube station and readopts Cosmopolitan air.
Refuses to play cards with ES as knows for sure cards are marked. Refer to Cosmopolitan air mentioned above.

Bunyip said When living in Angleterra* I heard a citizen of the Us of A state loudly that they still spoke the language of King George (the Third) to which a cultured English voice replied:' Yes, but English and the world have moved on two centuries since then."

... though neither has necessarily got saner in the interval.

Did someone say gin? Where? And who's got the tonic?

Erm, I like London. Like living here too...

Is impressed by splat24's superior cosmopolitaness and immediately offers to share gin.

<Has read above passages since last post>

<Thought London was in Ontario, Canada>

<If is now south of Rome, wonders which Rome it is south of?>

<thinks of gin>

<thinks of lubra>

(thinks of piccaninnies>

<thinks of cultural diversity>

<thinks of loss of cultural diversity in era of Big Mac, iPod, ghetto videos and rap>

<thinks will stop thinking now..............
