The 2009 Fforde Ffiesta (scheduled to take place in Swindon during 11th - 13th September 2009, as exclusively revealed at the Armadillo Convention which Jasper spoke at last weekend) is to be set in 1985.

What memories do YOU have of 1985?*

Films, events, music, TV adverts, fashions, news, celebrities, games, cars, foodstuffs, TV programmes - share your favourite (and most hated!) mid-1980s memories with us here.

We are going to try to source as much original circa. 1985 material as possible, so if you have anything you'd be able to, or would like to, donate, send or bring along, please feel free to get in touch:

fridays@ffordeffiesta.com

*if indeed you have any memories at all - I'm aware we have both very young and very old readers hereabouts...

You are organising the next convention on my birthday weekend! Thank you!

(and as we will be back from Anticipation, we can probably attend!)

1985 - new Coke arrived, Calvin & Hobbs debuted, Tetris, new coke replaced by old Coke

Am I correct in thinking that next September we go to Swindon and pretend its 1985?

Have been to Fforde Ffiesta site but only additional information seems to be that we might be required to eat fruit on a bus.

Am understandably confused since have not had invite like this since New Years Eve 1984 and even then am pretty sure offer did not involve Swindon although there might have been some oranges.

Geg, have you broken the magic?

I was planning on going to 1985, but pretending I was in Swindon.

Have accordingly revised plans and used Student Railcard to purchase ticket to 1985, judging by the nominations for that year's Booker - I'll be the one in the corner reading

Winner of the Booker Prize 1985: The Bone People by Keri Hulme.

Also nominated: Illywhacker by Peter Carey, The Good Terrorist by Doris Lessing, The Good Apprentice by Iris Murdoch, Last Letters from Hav by Jan Morris and The Battle of Pollack's crossing by J.L. Carr.

Curiously not nominated were:

Oranges are not the only fruit by Jeanette Winterson and Hawsksmoor by Peter Ackroyd.

If I could go, would I need to be one again?

Is it safe? Have you all been inoculated? Will people of pure and innocent hearts be left unhindered?

Egon.

I'm going to be in 1985, not too sure about in Swindon though. I spent last night in 1988 - 20 year high school reunion - so another couple of years shouldn't be too hard!

Swindon, 1985 - announcement that the railway works would close in the following year. Not a happy place. GWR 150th anniversary - mainline steam all over the place.

I was just looking at my high school photos last night - Was 85 the year of "Frankie Says - Relax" T-shirts or was that 84?

I was -3 years old in 1985. Someone tell me how to be 1985. I have no idea how to!

"Relax" released late-1983, became a hit early-1984. But 1985 was the year of "19" by Paul Hardcastle.

1985: The year that Top 40 radio went into the toilet forever-
curiously, there's a recent song about being preoccupied with that year that the youngsters may want to find for research purposes...

Have I mentioned how painful it was to live through the 80s the first time?
Couldn't find any shirts without shoulder pads *grumbles*

Hope the Gravitube gets set up in time, September's a terrible time to fly...

Hmm, if I go to 1985, I'm going to have to avoid a lot of family, they'll just be confused, mind you, if I meet them, I can tell them that if they have a son, make sure he learns trumpet so he can play more ska stuff
