bottersnikes and gumbles

A while ago Jon asked about this book and I was able to help him out. Just today my sister looked up the series on www.biblioz.com and was flabbergasted to discover that these out-of-print books are sold thru this website for over $100AU! She has three of the four books in the series, so she's sitting on a gold mine!

I just can't believe that these kids books would be worth so much. I mean they were brilliantly funny books, but surely you don't pay per laugh?

Mark you, if some clever chap or chapette at the publishers were to use their brain and reprint the things the market value would tend to plummet a bit.

It is astonishing the amount of brilliant stuff that is out of print - most of Donald E Westlake's Dortmunder series, and *all* of Colin Watson's utterly fabulous Flaxborough Chronicles, just to take two particularly heinous examples. Meanwhile there appears to be no problem publishing JRR Tolkien's laundry lists. Hmph.

Jon -

Good news - some of the Flaxborough Chronicles are in print.

Bad news - in large print books only.

That's a bit piggin' expensive is that. I'm about three books short of the set, too. Still, I think they still have 'em in the library.

Some of it is FAR worse than laundry lists. Heard the one about the hobbit with wooden feet?

Jon - have you tried abebooks.co.uk or zardozbooks.co.uk - just a thought.

just been on abebooks looking for the first volume of 'A Very Peculiar Practice' - I picked up the second at Barter Books in Alnwick.

Going rate: $50-$100.

ouch. I got the second for £1.49.

Checked the price of the second, much the same as the first. Crazy.
