Perhaps practicing on something bigger might make more sense. That way there would be more room to move.

Oh, and I would try using something other than pointy sticks as well. Actually they would probably work quite well for a hedgehog - you would notice if one went through!

Ah, this is too much work. Lets just stick cheese cubes on the hedgehogs quills and make it walk around as a buffet for the other woodland creatures.
