which characters do you want Thursday to meet?

If you could have Thursday meet any specific literary characters in one of her upcoming adventures, who would you choose? I'd personally like to see someone from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, especially Zaphod, since he's my favorite character.

Willy Wonka would also be good; I think that, as a character, he's been more influential to the modern cultural zeitgeist than people give him credit for (am I the only one who sees something disturbingly familiar in the Warden from Superjail?).

Any others? :)

I wonder what the copyright implications would be?

I would like her to meet Barry the time sprout, but only to see Mr. Rankin's reaction.........

(I don't think that Superjail has made it to these shores)

Meeting some of the Mr Men would be cool.

I think I'd like Thursday to meet lotd of characters, but should we post them here? Somewhere where Jasper can't potentially read it (leaving him open to the what happened to Pterry)?

I doubt Jasper will take any hints from anything we say, though.

Unless I'm completely missing the point, since Pterry doesn't ring any bells...

Terry Pratchett... He had to scrap a storyline once because someone had guessed it (if memory serves) because someone had once said something on AFP along the lines of 'Australia would be a good setting for a discworld book' when he happened to have just finished writing one, and then tried to sue.

Oh no. Now Thursday will never meet the Mr Men.
And it's all my fault...

I also remember that incident, but the bood did appear: "The Last Continent".

Yes, but it was a pain for everyone concerned.

I actually really enjoyed The Last Continent, worth the stress I am sure.

(Although I was likened to one of the characters once, nor was she in the least bit similar).

LOL, if we're talking about Neilette, are you entirely sure?

Ah, Terry Pratchett. You know, I've been trying to get into his work, but it just doesn't seem to hold that big an appeal to me, even though everyone tells me he's just right for my tastes. I've tried to finish "The Color of Magic" several times, but something about it just puts me off it. Is it worth it to soldier on?

In any case, here's the absolute best line for staging a TN / H2G2 meeting:

"Arthur could never get the hang of Thursday."

You absolutely should not start at the beginning with Pratchett. I think Sourcery (number 5?) is where he hit his stride. Before then there was a little too much dryness or formality somehow.

I never really liked Colour of Magic. I think he developed his characters better in later works. For example the earlier Esme Weatherwax from Equals Rites ends up being and entirely different being later on. Which is good and shows his progression.

Yeah. The books get better. And most of them can be read in any order, so just pick one at random and you should be fine.

That said, Mort, Pyramids, Guards! Guards! or Wyrd Sisters are good ones to start with.

The first two (Colour of Magic/ Light Fantastic) were parodies of Dungeons and Dragons rpgs and similar stuff from that time. They were not really representative of what Diskworld would become. Be warned, though, that there are lots of references to U.K. specific bits, especially in the earlier books. (I am guessing at a Texas location for Planet Cool)

I would agree with Martin's list as good starters, and possibly include Maskerade. Please note my list of favourites is not the same as my list of good starters!

There's an old story called "Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep," where a little girl loves jumping rope more than anything, and evetually meets the ultimate jumper, Andy Spandy (from an old jumprope rhyme: "Andy Spandy, sugardy candy, French...almond...rock! Bread-and-butter-for-your-supper's-all-your-mother's-got!"), and beat him at his own game. For a reward he turned her jumprope into one that couldn't be beaten, and turned the handles into sugardy candy and French almond rock that would never get smaller so she could suck sweet all her life. As a very, very old woman she entered a contest to save a special park in town where all the little girls used to jump rope. A developer was going to demolish it to build a big office building or something. Needless to say, the outcome is obvious...to a point. But a sweet, sweet story and one my middle daughter has also latched onto as a favorite.

All that to say I'd love to have Thursday meet Elsie Piddock, still skipping on the hill in the moonlight, and maybe Andy Spandy, too.

Cheers,

gailfus

re. discworld books, it really depends on what your other interests are... he's got books aligned with so many subjects... If you collect stamps try 'going postal', if you are interested in the history of religion try 'small gods', if you are interested in who-dunnits, the guards books are good,if shakespeare try 'wyrd sisters' or 'Lords and Ladies'...
