So then I got to wondering if you could carve them, I thought you'd inadvertently invented a wonderful new artform. Incredibly, there is already a company online marketing them. Very beautiful - I might buy one - wonderful thing the internet.

Does it move?

0) Entirely animal but outwardly mineral
1) No - not an insect
2) No - not a sea creature
3) Yes - much more likely to found in the average home than a tilobite. I think "likely" to be found in most homes, is probably more accurate than "expect".
4) Not ivory
5) No - it doesn't move, until gravity gets involved.

I don't think the breadbox question is useful at this point, so I will adapt to:

Is it larger than an average sized hard back book?

Why? Why can't I answer the breadbox question? I lie awake at night dreaming of answering the breadbox question. I had an answer worked out for the barcode breadbox question, but nobody asked. Oh well.

6) No - its smaller than an average size hard back book, mass wise,
and smaller than an average size hard back book in three our of four dimensions.

Is it edible?

7) Yes - its edible

Is it in fact a living animal? (As opposed to a part of an animal, an artistic representation of one, or a stuffed and mounted specimen?)

8) It is, only in part, an only sometimes a living animal. It isn't part of an animal, an artistic representation of one or a stuffed and mounted specimen.

This will teach me to read about vampires and werewolves. "Only sometimes a living animal" just made me say "ick"... <grin>

You can't answer the breadbox question b/c I didn't ask it. For that I humbly ask your forgiveness. If you can convolute the answers enough so we don't guess this one either, I promise to ask it next time.

Wondering which of the 4 dimensions is larger than a book's. Hmmm. Wondering what is alive (sometimes) (ick) but doesn't move. Ah. Hmmmmmmm.

Is the exterior normally very smooth?

9)Yes, very smooth.

Hoping that means we're done!

Is it related to the contents of one or more books by Jasper Fforde?

Did it come first?

Since you'll be unsurprised to hear that I can't answer that question, I have no choice but to admit defeat, and retire, hurt, into my shell.

So for your birthday - I give you this crown and sceptre.

I was bit worried that you might find it a bit showy, so I've put the receipt in the bag.

Congratulations MistyCat

If the object we're after is what you hint at, then admittedly your statement is correct in the traditional sense, but scientifically it is wrong as of yesterday, thank to the Brits. The question has been and therefore can be answered: It did not come first.

It's true - I completely failed to make the "cracked it" joke.

With such shameless puns, everyone seems fairly hard-boiled.

I really feel I can't accept the win, when both Violetmoon and delacuesta obviously were first to crack the problem. Even then I was beaten by a small troop of King's Men, mounted on the King's horses and carrying a roll of duct tape each.

Any volunteers? I expect the same high standard displayed by geg.
