I was on a training course (Wordperfect - shows you how long ago) with a bunch of other unemployed types. One of the girls used the word 'frigging' with monotonous regularity. The tutor eventually suggested that she didn't use it so often, as it gave a bad impression and wasn't ladylike.
"My aunt uses it all the time, and she's a lady," girl protests.
The tutor didn't bother trying to argue...

At least the girl didn't say "...and she's a frigging lady".

I think they should make all the announcements on Windows a little more user-friendly for the next release.

So:

"You computer has commited an illegal error..." etc
becomes
"You have screwed up. Your computer will probably crash in a minute, so hope to God you weren't doing something important 'coz you ain't gonna have a chance to save it now."

"Insufficient runtime"
becomes
"Stop trying to do so much!"

"Start"
becomes
"Press me to do stuff"

"My Documents"
becomes
"Where you keep your stuff"

"My Computer"
becomes
"Where you mess with stuff"

Anyone think of any others?

I get the one which warns me that my virtual memory is low and Windows is currently increasing the virtual memory space I have available.

This translates as: "This machine just wasn't made to run all this new-fangled fancy software - go and buy yourself a new computer already!"

You have a Jewish computer? I like it. Every time you boot up it could go "Nu?"

I keep getting thrown-off line ! It's happening every five minutes. Goddamn !!!$£"^$%& computers. I screamed briefly the last time it happened but managed to restrain myself from too much noise.

A few weeks ago, I was whooping with laughter at something the cats had done. I made so much noise that the nice Italian couple in the flat downstairs knocked on the door to see if I was all right.

I've made an Avon icon for my blog. It's really useful for when I am fed up with computers. You know, I'm really starting to understand why he was always in such a foul mood. Not only did he have to work with computers all the time, but the wretched things talked back...

No, I don't have a Jewish computer, but I have a non-Jewish Canadian friend who was brought up in a mostly Jewish area, and she says "already" a lot. It tends to rub off on one!

Have recalled that last time I had problems staying on-line, nice person on help-desk (they do exist), suggested my phone cable might be up the creek. So I have unearthed the only other one I have and am using that. Results OK so far......
Unfortunately, it only does modem to socket, and the suspect bit of cable is socket to socket. Hence metres of wire trailing across bedroom floor and bedroom phone not plugged in. Shall have to go shopping tomorrow for new cable with correct fittings.

When I turned computer on to try out new theory of faulty cable, I found the blasted thing has swallowed the pic I use as a wallpaper. It's in the wretched machine all right, and shows as an option in Display, but Windows doesn't want to show it. It's done this to me before but I can't remember how to sort it out. Grrrrrr.

perhaps one of your kitties decided to snack on your phone wire? We've had that happen before. And the problems get worse on humid days when the moisture creeps in and sorta "shorts" the connection.

We also have that problem on the line that leads to our house from the box at the street. Apparently, they've had problems with corrosion because the box won't seal correctly and they're refusing to replace the whole box (10 houses worth) because it's too expensive and they're going to be upgrading it in the next year anyway. So now, whenever it rains we get crackles and pops and hisses. Sometimes so bad you can't even hear at all! Thankfully, our internet is through our cable television company and runs through the coaxial cable and it seems to be relatively secure.

Good luck

That's a concept - computer that snap, crackle and pop! Technology frustration combined with the wholesame nutrition of puffed rice... a recipe for a real buzz! At least it should stay crunchy in milk.

Got Skiffle (the cat) back as my wallpaper. Remembered that I had turned off images in my browser a couple of days ago - as I was in a hurry to read something (poss. fforum). 98 will only display my pic of Skiffle if I have active desktop set as a webpage. So if images are turned off on my browser, no pix show on desktop !
Marvellous, what windows can do, ain't it ?
And new cable seems to be solution to problem of constantly losing connxion. Gosh, I feel geeky :)

my computer's name is anthony. it's easier to have a name to call him by in case some frantic pleading/cursing is in order. he's also a convict on the run as he does illegal operations all the time...methinks things along the lines of causing much undue pulling-of-hair

It's funny, although I've heard a lot of people complaining about their cat eating thru cables, none of our cats ever had, and we've been through about 10 or so, some of which would eat just about anything....

jon - did you ever get your computer sorted?

Re: Damn computers

My PC is not yet sorted ... it needs an assist from The Brother in re a new power supply pack. I have got Claire's working quite happily with my monitor and the new broadband modem, but it needs more memory.

I need mine back though, so that I can be online while Somebody plays endless card games ..... (quite apart from getting access to all my files.
