All right, I'll do it tomorrow, perhaps. We'll have to keep bumping up near the top of the threadlist (or reposting it) though.

May have to redefine 'frequently' then, but there's nothing to say the questions asked can't be more and more obscure - such as 'what is the velocity of a dodo with a coconut?'

I've already mentioned being allergic to cats. FWIW, I don't work in a library either.

but unfortunately, there's no money and very little swag involved LOL! IN FACT, we (Jon B. and I) pay money to run it, so I definitely don't think there's a way to say it's a job...a labor of love, perhaps :-)

In response to your question, the majority of the intelligent population are cat owners. Who else would have a pet that can wash itself, can find food when really necessary and can play wth anything, including my bra, and we think its hysterival, 'how cute' we all say. Cats generally do not drool (as do dogs, nearly all the time) and they are less stinky than other pets I could mention.
I rest my case!

My dog doesn't drool, is just as likely to chase string as any cat, sleeps like a cat (ie all day, especially if given a patch of sunlight and/or a fireplace/radiator), raids the bin like cats do etc etc - plus you don't have to bend down to stroke her. Okay, so she needs a walk everyday, but this means I get some excercise, and she's far more amusing bouncing through barley than a cat would be...

AS for finding food, she's a rescue dog who lived on the streets for a while, so I reckon she's pretty good at getting food...

H'mm... "less stinky than other pets"... evidently you haven't experienced Minsky's breath at close quarters! Though, to be fair, no member of the animal kingdom can manage halitosis quite like a German shepherd can. Even Minsky has yet to sink to that particular nadir.

Is Minky a bit stinky?
Maddie doesn't have stinky breath, but the other end gts a bit rank if she's been fed anything other than IAMS. She's a tad fussy that way. Though she's the cutest cat ever and has an evergrowing fanlclub, here in Abredeen (mostly men, she's a bit of a floozy).
She's mostly grey, with white socks and a white chest, basically looks like she's got a scarf/gloves on, even in winter(it always feels like Winter here in Aberdeen).

I know all dogs don't drool, but I'm more a cat girl than a dog girl. Although Maddie's hairy (being a cat, thats kinda obvious I know, unless you have one of the inside out cats, no fur, erurgh!) she's not as hairy as a dog, who all seem to make me sneeze!

/Looks across room at small dog snoring on bed who may be responsible for recent horrible smell.

Anne McCaffery came to do a reading in Sheffield a few years ago. I asked her why there are so many intelligent feline species in s-f/fantasy, but no canine. I don't think she had an answer for that.

There are at least 3 types of felinoids in classic Star Trek novels. Also C J Cherryh's Chanur books (recommended). There's more, but I can't think of them off-hand.

I think there's a thing where cats are expected to be really clever all the time, but for me rats, cats and *certain* breeds of dogs are all pretty even. If you want real intelligence you need a horse, pig or octopus....

As I mentioned in another thread, I currently have six cats:

Smokey (female, age 12) short-haired silver tabby, quiet and overweight, a "pillow kitty"
Pepper (female, age 11) short-haired calico tabby, very small, loves to climb
Turkey (female, age 3) Birman, tries to mother all the other cats
Fluffy (female, age 2) long-haired tannish-gray tabby, prone to dreadlocks
Jack (male, age 2) short-haired dark-gray (almost black) tabby, long and tall but lean, quite a hunter
Callie (female, age 1) short-haired mostly black calico, thinks she's a puppy, hero-worships Jack

Turkey is the mother of Fluffy and Jack. Neither of them looks anything like her, though. They take after their feral dads. (We were intending to breed Turkey to another Birman and then get her spayed, since my daughter who was 16 at the time had never had any newborn kittens, and myself having grown up with mama cats dropping at least one litter a year I thought it was an experience she shouldn't miss even though letting your cats breed is politically incorrect these days. But she escaped from the house before we could put that plan into effect.)

All of them sleep on my bed except Pepper, who is not a cat's cat and tends to hide whenever any of the four younger cats are around.

Sarah,

Regarding your cats' namesakes: do you study Artificial Intelligence or Computational Linguistics?

I used to, back in my college days in the 70's. My master's thesis advisor was Terry Winograd. I didn't go into it professionally, though. But I still sometimes read related works, like last week I read Steve Grand's "Creation: Life and How to Make It", which was very interesting.

Okay, Teri...with 6 cats, how DO you keep up with the litterbox maintenance? We've only got 4 cats and it feels like we're wading knee deep in it! (thankfully it doesn't smell that way...most of the time! LOL)
