This thread seems to have remained on topic for quite a while. This is simply not good enough.

Here, have a digression. And take the test. I can say with confidence that my score will not be beaten.

New beginnings – or – What happened to my novel’s first sentence?

OK, you can probably all equal my score.

Edited to give credit where credit is due.

I admire the elegance of the quiz coding on page at the above link.

90% for me as well, and I'm amazed I completely failed to recognise the 2nd line of a favourite story. I even read it in magazine form before it was "novelised".

I must be a total ignoramus.

My score was 0%.

Thus bolstering the egos of all other persons who try the test.

Don't worry Bunyip, the quiz did have a limited range of topics. If you don't read that sort of stuff you're stuffed to begin with.

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, took it of her and spent the rest of the afternoon absorbed in reading.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, then put the project into the "too hard" basket, had a nice cuppa and a lie-down and moved on to other projects.

My friend Stamford suggested that I shared lodgings with his friend Holmes, but upon first meeting I discovered he was a drug addict who shot holes in the walls when bored, so I declined the opportunity. A Study in Scarlet
