I wanted to be the first to wish Jon and his beloved Claire a very happy first wedding anniversary!

Claire is such a saint to put up with you, Jon! Please thank her for sharing your time with us!

(and why is she, herself, NOT posting here!?)

again, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

enjoy your romantic get-away-weekend!

Congratulations, it does sound as if Clare deserves a medal - going on the inane or should that be insane posts I've seen. Enjoy!

Why, thank-you. Personally I think I'm the saint, but ...

We are going to stay at the Wykeham Arms in Winchester for some top-class pampering, Friday through Monday. Jane Austen will feature heavily in our list of things to do (house, tomb, P&P to read), but otherwise the emphasis is on making complete oinky pigs of ourselves. (All right, who said 'no change there, then'?)

Claire doesn't post here because she isn't a Fforde ffan at all; her literary tastes don't run that way. She did try to post once, to complain about this Thursday Next woman stealing her husband, but she had the same problem as Minsky, in that it wouldn't let her be herself, but insisted she be me. Which she isn't.

Have a lovely lovely time in Winchester - I only live 17 miles away so know it well.

The Wykeham Arms is just great and only a few minutes walk from JA's house - but it's only the house she died in and isn't open to the public. However, a short drive out towards Alton will bring to to Chawton where the house where she actually lived and wrote in is and that is open to the public - and there's a superb pub just across the road!

After the walking round, the refrectory at the Cathedral does a very decent cup of tea and nice cakes - but then I don't know a Cathedral refrectory that doesn't (Liverpool Anglican is the best!) Failing that, the Forte Tearooms (opposite the back of WHS and above the bookies) is a lot nicer than it's venue suggests.

Nice places to eat - if you're into Indian food, then I'd recommend the one in St George's Street, renamed itself the Dil Se (I think but is the only one in St George's Street) and looks very much UNlike an Indian restaurant but the food is excellent.

Anyway - you probably grew up in Winchester and know all this so it's not much use to you - but have a great time anyway and Happy Anniversary!

Not I! Neither of us have any connection with the place other than we've both visited it on business and love it. I've stayed at the Wykeham Arms * twice before, but didn't have much time to explore.

So your info has been printed off and will be very useful, thanks!

What do you mean no connection with Winchester?

You lived there for years....what, Winchester is a city, oooh, well you live and learn, I thought is was just a small avenue in Chadderton.

Happy Anniversary!

(I'd offer to do an anniversary cake, but it wouldn't ship worth a damn, and would probably be moldly by the time it got there in any case).

Yeah. Have a great time. And may you get lots of papery things (or whatever it is you do on first anniversaries).

Thanks all for the kind wishes. And If we get papery things can they be all with pictures of Her Madge on, thank-you.

And I've no idea what you do on first anniversaries, but we intend to drink until happy and eat until we burst. It could be the start of a whole new tradition.

well, if you print these well-wishes out as well as any emails you might have received, your gifts are then taken care of, seeing as how the traditional gift is paper. LOL

But wouldn't one rather have paper money instead? I got a weed whacker for my first anniversary. Not sure where the paper part came in on that one. (although, I did ask for one for my birthday in June...he was just late, as our anniversary is in August!)

By the way, rather than buying each other gifts for our anniversary, we usually buy some kind of luxury type gift for the house. Some piece of computer equipment, DVD player, furniture...that kind of thing. Something we both can enjoy. And then we usually have a "romantic*" dinner somewhere...

Okay - so I was in Winchester early this afternoon and just happened to have a small anniversary cake and card signed on behalf of the Fforumites on me and so I thought I might was well wander over to the Wykeham Arms and leave it for the celebrating couple...........

It was going to be champagne but I know we're a sober lot and wouldn't want to encourage anyone to stray from the straight and narrow........
