Between me and my mother we can get up to about 60% or so, which I reckon isn't bad...

I've read 40...including Kane and Abel, too. Doh.

I'm thinking of trying to read the rest over the summer, maybe.

About 15 years ago, some broadsheet newspaper (poss, the Times) published a list of 100 books that every well-read person should have read. It definitely included the Bible, and a whole bunch of traditional and modern classics. I think I scored about 25 at the time; it might be nearer 50 by now. The Bible is not included, as the only copy I have is a small presentation copy I got at my Christening, and it's printed in squintyprint, which makes it uncomfortable to actually read.

I tell you one book that isn't on that list that I must read; Slaughterhouse 5, by Kurt Vonnegut. Our great Panjandrum cites it often as a seminal influence (posh prose) and while I think I've read almost everything else he has cited, this is a major omission. (Alright, I've never read The Little Prince, either, but I can't say I have a burning desire to rectify this omission).

And where is P G Wodehouse in this list, eh? Eh?

Speaking of books, some people here mentioned the Da Vinci Code in another thread, I just want to say I'm halfway now and I'm not sure I can go to bed before i finish it, which is bad coz i have a long day tomorrow and i need to sleep...

Funnily enough one of my correspondents (you know the ones, the ones who e-mail me to tell me my Notes are wrong ..) has just recommended the Da Vinci Code to me. I shall have to check it out.

It is quite a good book, but mostly because of the facts and the mystery...the writing's pretty mediocre. The plot and facts are really gripping and cool, tho.

I'll probably pick it up eventually myself. It was highly recommended by several folks at the bookstore last time I was there, but I was feeling too poor to buy a hardback at the time.

Finished it at 12h30am. The facts and stuff make it really interesting (but the writing wasn't *that* bad!)

I've read 23, heard of pretty much all of them.

my score of 23 was largely helped by the fact that 20% of the list seemed to be by a mr T Pratchett...

I got 27. Not helped by the fact that I haven't finished any Pratchett or Dickens. Some - Kane and Abel for example, I'm glad to say I've not read; others, like The Godfather and Gone with the Wind, were such good films that I've no real desire to read the book. Plenty I would like though - Clan of the Cave Bear for starters...

My 32 is quite good considering i never read any Pratchett or Dickens... that would have been 10 more in one go...
I do have a few more of the books at home so I can try and catch up.

I think that I've read about 30 of them (NOT including either 'Ulysses' or 'Kane & Abel'), but can't remember which bits of Dicklens I have actually read (years ago, in most cases) and which I've only seen as films. Might the new film be one reason why 'I Capture The Castle' managed to get onto the list? It's a shame that apparently so few people know 'Diary Of A Nobody'...

I sent a copy of 'Diary of a Nobody' - one of my favourite books - over to a friend in Norway. He spent Christmas reading extracts to his family and friends - with the result that I had to spend a lot of time buying and sending out more copies for them to own!

If I recall correctly I've read 29 of them - wow! thought it'd be more like 9.

I've read 41 of them (including, to my eternal shame, Kane and Abel. There, I've admitted it now).

Glad (and surprised) to see that Perfume made it onto the list -- I had no idea is was that well known. If you haven't read it, go out and buy a copy right now!

Adam: Yeah. But how many are JK Rowling and Roald Dahl ?
(Or is that just me ??)

i didn't have all Roald Dahl, but i did have the 4 Harry Potters.

On the other hand I haven't read Kane and Abel but it's one that I think i saw the TV series.
