Educated horses?

Derby Day on 7 June and the following horses are listed to run:

Catcher in the Rye
The Great Gatsby

Surely worth an each-way bet? Especially as they're both on the Big Read 100!

A possible runner is Spartacus - if it runs, that's DEFINITELY worth a flutter!

Ah, but which horse is Spartacus?

(btw, Waterstones have got a 3 for 2 on the top 100 - plus 150 others. I got Bear V Shark, The Dice Man and Good Omens today...)

Dice Man is interesting. Quite enjoyed it when I first read it, tried re-reading recently and just couldn't get into it...

Aaargh, don't tempt me to go into Waterstone's - it's seriously bad for my financial health. And I still haven't got my own copy of "Good Omens", though I borrowed it from a friend and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Where is Worthing? (sorry my british geography is kind of limited)

We only have shops in London (counting Croydon, Uxbridge and Staines) then Solihull and Birmingham and 2 in Manchester. We're still very small...

Worthing is on the south coast, about eleven miles west of Brighton. That means your Croydon branch would be nearest. Is it close to East Croydon Station, which is one of the stops made by Worthing-to-London trains?

If you're near Brighton you can go to Borders then, same Head Office...
:-)

(Big shops are Borders, little shops are Books etc)

OK, Borders I know about... I've bought some CDs there (as they have a better selection of 'world music' than most other places that I've seen...), but no books so far as I normally buy those from 'Optimus Books' which is a local (Worthing) independant bookseller.

Oooh, we've got a Borders.

They're *technically* bad and evil, what with being big and corporate and threatening to sack staff if they join trade unions.

But they also open late, and have comfy seats and a cafe, and were the first place in Glasgow to do 3 for 2 offers.

It was a while ago I heard about it....not long after they opened here. I know the specific story was about people who were working in the cafe. I'll see if I can dig it out...

The original story I read would have been about this:

The Scottish TUC and shop worker's union USDAW are calling on union members to boycott Borders Books after they sacked five workers in Glasgow for eating without permission! The store has also banned sellers of The Big Issue from its premises. Borders are no strangers to such practices. The IWW in the States have been organising a boycott of the chain since 1996 when the company sacked IWW member Mariam Fried for organising a recruitment drive amongst staff. The American United Food and Commercial Worker's Union also report that the chain, which has two stores in London as well as Brighton, Leeds and York, pursue a range of anti union tactics aimed at preventing their staff organising - so buy your books somewhere else!

IIRC, it was stuff like nibbling on carrots when preparing salads, not an all you can eat type bonanza!

Other sites I found (mostly anti-capitalist ranty ones, but there must be some truth in it...)

(this is apparently a leaked internal document)

Now I feel bad for still buying from them sometimes :o)

IWW? Are the Wobblies STILL around?

Back when I was still in my teens I had a part-time job at one of my home borough's public libraries. At one point a union official told me (wrongly, but apparently on purpose rather than in accidental error) that the closed shop arrangement which they'd forced on the local council meant that although I was only working there for about eight hours a week I would HAVE to join a union or lose that job. This attempt at coercion did NOT endear the union movement to me...
