If Thursday was a film....
Posted by: Pilkijam (---.gsi.gov.uk)

All,

This is my first post to a fforum and am I relative newcomer to Jasper Fforde and am waiting for the Well of Lost Plots with a deal of impatience.

Given Jasper's previous form in the movie industry and the amount of success that J. K Rowling's Harry Potter novel sequence has had - though I have not read nor seen either books nor films - has had at the box office I have this question which may or may not have already been posted.

"If there were to be a Thursday Next film who would you cast?"

Pilkijam.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Welcome to the fforum.
The question of casting has been asked before. Jasper's own anounced preference was for unknowns, so that people would be more likely to see the characters themselves rather than the actors who were playing them. Still, it's an intersting question (which I can't answer, as I don't watch many movies or much television these days).

If the film was being made at some point during the 1960s/70s/80s, then I'd suggest Patrick McNee for the role of Colonel Next.

If it's a film of LiaGB, then Maggie Smith for Miss Havisham . . . I agree with Jaspers point about using unknowns, but I reckon it's fine to use well-known actors for the fictional characters.

By the way, welocme to the madhouse, James. Is that the James Pilkington who's my brother-in-law? (If so, you'll just have heard you've got a new niece . . .)

Heh. The reason this place stuck in my mind was because I thought Dave and Rob were people my mate - who's a librarian at leeds uni - knew. But I got her to come and check, and they're not - you're too intelligent to be them, apparently!

Idle thought - what's the opposite of Mensa?

Eh, it's a noun, so it doesn't have one? (I think - do any nouns have opposites?)

Or, alternatively, Asnem.

What does DNA stand for?

National Dyslexics Association.

OK so I'm cruel. No offense meant. Much.

Welcome to the nuthouse Pilkijam. I'm sure I remember something along those lines being my first post... scary. From which side of the pond do you hail?

Colin Firth for Landen, definitely. That'd get me to go and see it.

Actually I'm with Jasper for turning it into six hour episodes for TV, the BBC or something. Then I could buy it on BBC DVD afterwards, and we wouldn't have to lose any plot. Genuis!

There was a good (if slightly un-PC) joke in the Metro this morning, something like "Don't hire a dwarf with learning difficulties. It's not big, and it's not clever."

Oh lol, like it. Where do you live Dante if you're reading the Metro?

Sarah, I'm in Glasgow - I think they have different editions for different parts of the country though, at least partially.

(Unless everyone got 6 pages of Celtic losing yesterday!)

Not that I noticed. I didn't realise that there were that many different editions. I thought it was just a West Midlands Transport thing.

Naah, it's a cut down Daily Mail type thing... They reserve a couple of pages for local stuff, the rest is all the same. I occasionally get to compare editions left on the train...
