Argumentative topic...

Here's a question and a half - what's your viewpoint on closures for wine bottles? Cork vs artificial cork vs screwtop, please...

(for the record, I'm actually pretty neutral - although hate finding corked wine)

Speaking as a part time barman, proper cork or screw tops is best, those synthetic ones gum up our big corkscrew a treat. On the otherhand, I don't drink a lot of wine, so i wouldn't notice if it was corked.

Trust me - if it's corked you notice. It smells really bad...

I prefer fruit wines, which usually have screwtops. I always take a good corkscrew/bottle opener to parties though. It's one way of making friends

Screw tops are the least painfull.

Well I havn't been hit by one of those anyway, The plastic ones are more painful in that situation.

If it's the sort needing corkscrews I prefer real cork, feels nicer too.

Proper corks every time, screw tops when you're to tipsy to handle a corkscrew.

I don't like the website address printed on plastic stoppers

I'm a philistine, and like the plastic corks because I've never quite got the hang of a corkscrew, so they're less likely to fall to bits/ break in half and stick.

I knew someone who had a corkboard made of actual corks stuck to the wall. That was cool.

Proper cork corks only please. Screwtops are for wimps and plastic 'corks' are so naff.

Preferably the proper corks that have wider tops attached, so that they can be removed easily and then replaced if the bottle wasn't finished... Blandy's use these for their Madeira.

I'm torn -- the plastic corks mean the wine doesn't get corked (hurrah) but there's something aesthetically unpleasing about them. And they're more difficult to recycle. (You can chop up cork corks and turn them into guide dogs for the blind or something -- well there used to be a cork recycling bin in the local recycling centre that was sponsored by the Guide Dogs Association.)

Oooh, tough one. I once seriously lost face with this rather dishy girl cos I couldn't get the cork out of a wine bottle. This was in the days before easy-use corkscrews.

Um. Corks can cork wine and break up on you. Plastic corks look naff and aren't biodegradable. Screw-tops don't give a perfect seal.

Real corks, by a short head. Mine's a Rioja, if you're buying.

Easy-use corkscrews? Either I haven't come across them, or I'd *hate* to encounter a difficult-use one...

I've got a very easy one which can be used even by those with bad wrists. And I favour real corks over plastic ones, although I don't really have a strong objection to the latter. If it's a screw top, though, someone else can open it! - I do have a gadget for that kind of thing, but it gets a bit fiddly when adjusted right down to the size of a bottle top.

I like those corkscrews that don't actually screw but pump air beneath the cork to pop it out. Very flash, and probably useful for inflating hedgehogs too.

Do you often find youself with hedgehogs in need of inflating?

No, I'm sorry, but the concept of cuddly hedgepigs has completely boggled me. And by easy use corkscrews I mean ones that work on some mechanical principle and therefore do not rely solely on brute strength, unlike the one I had on the aforementioned disastrous occasion.
