It was a couple of devastating tackles but from the replays it didn't look illegal, it wasn't high and there wasn't a leg tackle while in the air. Respect to Tana Umaga for showing concern though!

The Oz/England game: Wendell Sailor has great pace! Pity he didn't get the chances this time. I don't mean to diss Australia, they've got amazing play but I miss the previous captain. Still, I have to take a pride in what England achieved, flying pigs or no.

I wasn't sure that the guy wo hit him wasn't on his knees. I only know that's illegal as I got sent off for it in a school match. Mind you, the other guy left in an ambulance, so it may have been justified...

BTW, speaking of sports, I feel slightly less depressed about my ice hockey team having been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The Ducks went all the way to the finals, and while they didn't win they did win three games and drag it out to the full seven games in the best of 7 series. This makes is slighly less embarassing to have been beaten by them.

Still slightly bemused at the thought of an ice-hockey team in southern California in the first place, never mind the stupid name. I mean, what next, beach volleyball from Anchorage?

hehehe, Jon, there are some damn good volleyball players from Anchorage! They have lots of daylight to play by in the summer...and they play inside all winter.

One of my former beach v-ball teammates was from a little town outside of Anchorage...and she was quite good, thankyouverymuch LOL

(another one was from Wales!)

Ah, but, beach volleyball is in no wise the same thing as real volleyball, being invented in Copacabana and featuring a uniform of .... um .... not very much, really. Hot sun is more or less obligatory, otherwise the whole thing would just degenerate into a farcical excuse to watch nubile women in thongs leap about in a sandpit. Which it isn't, obviously, or it wouldn't have got into the Olympics, would it?

I'm waiting for Trivial Pursuit to get into the Olympics. It's my only hope of sporting glory.

Has Darts ever been included in the Olympics?

I didn't know anyone NEEDED an excuse to watch nubile women in thongs jumping about in a sandpit. (Dr Jim Slip).

Are you sure what a thong is?

Surely not REALLY in thongs??

Or are they things that try to look like thongs?

Look it's a proper sport with rules and everything. Although most sports don't feel the need to specify a minimum length of female thigh to be displayed, but I'm sure there are very good sporting reasons for those rules.

Yeah, right...

Thank GSD, that was not the given "uniform" when I was playing semi-pro!! That could have been disastrous!! It's not good when your skin glows brighter than the sun! Small children could have been harmed...(or at least mentally scarred for life!)

I've got this mental image of a dancing purple hippo that just won't go away. (See the surreal websites thread if you're baffled!)

well, Sarah, unfortunately, that's approximately what you would have seen if Thongs had been the accepted uniform when I was playing! ROFLMAO!! (and wouldn't you know it, our team color was that same shade of purple!)

I had to share that little gem of a movie with my brother...he thought it was hysterical

My Australian/Malaysian blog friend, RedChew, found that one, so a vote of thanks to her, I think!

Now I need to clarify the termanology 'thongs'. Do we mean those really uncomfortable undies that are designed to fit up your .... bottom. Or do we mean the sandle type footwear also called jandles, flip-flops and other assorted names. Coz here in Aus we have thongs, the footwear, and g-string, the really uncomtable undies. And you'd never be able to play beach voleyball in our sort of thongs.

Just to clarify.

they were talking about the uncomfortable undies! Eesh...I spend my day picking my underwear OUT of my butt...why on earth would I put it there on purpose!

I know, I know, more information than anyone really wanted! LOL

As an aside, I thought it might please everyone to know that the word 'fart' is one of the oldest/longest surviving word forms in the world.

We know this 'cos the word is pretty much the same in every Indo-European language -- Latin pedere, Sanskrit parda etc.

That other four-letter f-word is of a similar vintage . . .

PSD: it is possible to get thongs for men, you know. Go and try the experiment if you're interested. Just don't tell us the results, OK? ;-)
