Hi Holly - yes, I should have said "In my opinion, 'The Catcher in the Rye' is a piece of terrible, over-rated self-gratification". I realise other people feel differently, and I mean them no offence. I too read 'Rye' at around the age of 13, courtesy of the GCSE English syllabus, and reached a different opinion to you - that was the only implication of my posting. It's just a personal comment, after all.

Incidentally, I use the word "self-gratification" in that phrase as a euphemism for a solo intimate practice. In other words, my opinion of 'Rye' is that it's J Arthur Rank (cross-referencing to another thread there) - that's just my own opinion of it. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

Oh you are way tooo civil. Maybe your opinion was formed by having to study it, or maybe not. Obviously I am far too well bred to pick up any other meaning to the term self-gratification, I have no idea what you are implying!! and in confusion I think my mileage stays fairly constant.

*sniggers a la Beavis and Butthead*

I'm surprised no-one picked up on PSD's "bishop bashing" ... Reminded me of what Joffy said to that old lady in TEA and then realised the subject of Joffy was entirely appropriate .. was that intentional, PSD?

And to think this started as a thread about books...

Clan of the Cave Bear wasn't all that bad. The sequels, on the other hand, well...

I always had the feeling that the author wrote COTCB, found out how popular it was and decided that she could make a mint out of sequels, but then had difficulty tying them in with the original. Eiether that or she really wants to break into the porn market....

Isn't Jean wotsit (Auel?) a bloke? Or have I been labouring under a misapprehension?

I believe it's a woman, although I'm not absolutely positive.

The Authors Picture that they sometimes have on the dust-jackets shows a woman of about 45. Then again, she could be a transvestite.
