Dante was right about Terry Pratchett. No more humour. (Night Watch, Wee Free Men) despite in some places being convinced he is funny. Either that or I've got Jon's problem.

'He who breaks a thing to see what it is made of has left the path of reason' or is maybe a critic.

I loved "Night Watch", but although it had some very funny moments, I didn't think overall that it was so much amusing as gripping. Mind you, I just like Sam Vimes. I love the way he's developed over a series of stories.

Same here. He's great. And I love the Night Watch. Mind you TP's written so many books he might be getting into a rut a bit. I should be lucky enough to get into such a rut!

Quite right. But does he know he's in it?

Thanks, PSD.

I was about to reply "I'm always right" to Dave, but the title of this thread is proof enough that I occasionally make a wrong call...

If you were a Discworld character, what & where would you like to be? A member of the Ankh-Morpork Watch, a witch up in the Ramtops, a wizard at UU, a wizard at BU, a driver in the XXXX-ian outback, a barbarian hero, or what? Personally I'd favour a tenured position at UU...

I've now read everything up until Guards, Guards.

I think I still have some books to go until according to you TP starts getting boring, right?

I want to be Mort :D
Naaa, a quiet witch up in the Ramtops....

H'mm. This is a difficult one, me being female. I don't get nearly as much choice as the men.

Perhaps I'll be Sergeant Angua... the most dangerous vegetarian on the Disc! :-D

(Edit some time later... er... actually just remembered I did a test on this some time ago and came out as Lady Sybil Ramkin. Oh well. Come in and sit down, everyone. Mind the dragons!)

Would like to be Carrot, but have a nasty feeling I may be more of a Cecil St. John Worsborough Nobbs.

Nobby's great, did you ever hear Guards!, Guards! on R4 Melvin Hayes as Nobby, very well done.

The guy who played Nobby on stage at Coventry etc. was just as I imagined him. Can't remember his name though. Vimes was played by Paul Darrow.

I always feel so sorry that they didn't let Paul keep the fluffy blue dragon slippers. He wanted them so badly, bless him!

*ducks as Paul's macho Avon image explodes into fragments*

Paul Darrow *sigh* Now that is one man who is Sam down to a tee!

Has it just got hotter in here or is me?

I saw 'Guards, Guards' in Hull, and it was hilarious. The whole cast were excellent, and seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the audience were.
I'm not a great Pratchett fan, as I find he seems to be trying too hard to achieve his effect, in some books. I did enjoy the novel of 'Guards, Guards' though, and 'NightWatch'

I am a fan of Paul Darrow and Blakes 7 generally. Sarah and I have just booked to go to next year's Star One convention, as we enjoyed ourselves so much at this year's.

Lycanthra: if you're a Darrow fan, you might want to order a copy of my western 'Darrow's Word'. See the rather old '@#$%& Books' thread for more details. You'll probably find it a couple of pages back.

The books arrived from my publisher at the weekend, so I should get an idea of P&P tomorrow and I'll be able to start sending out copies that folk have ordered soon.

Melin Hayes as Nobbs . . . didn't hear it, but I bet it was absolutely spot on . . . can't help laughing just imagining it -- I'm a big fan of both of them (and have a sneaking suspicion that Terry P may have had Melvin in mind (in IAHHM) when he wrote Guards Guards etc. Just a thought.

Eh, Skiffle, if you brought my copy of Darrow's Word to Leeds as well, that would save on P&P - but only if it won't all end up too heavy!

Sarah! I've just had one shower, now I've got to go and have another one.

I just remembered, I was in a pub in Lacock when the beeb was filming Randell & Hopkirk deceased, Vic & Bob were out in the street, my shameless hussy of a sister got their autographs and Gareth Thomas (Blake of Blake 7 for you youngsters) was in the pub and she cornered him for half hour, he was really lovely.
