Had to show somebody....

It's my friend's twenty-first tomorrow, so I wrote a poem for her. I just hope she likes it....

Meanwhile, I thought you lot might like to share it, and if you ever want to use and adapt it, you have my blessing.

A poem, on the eve of Felicity’s Twenty-First birthday.

So now you’re nearly twenty-one,
It’s time to say goodbye to fun
And to embrace maturity,
For now you’re old, Felicity.

Goodbye to nights in dodgy bars,
Stumbling home in the small hours.
Or singing badly out of tune
With your girlfriends in someone’s room.

No evenings yakking on the phone
When no-one’s listening; and disown
The half-arsed half-wits that you’ve found
Sharing your bed when you come round.

No more short skirts or push-up bras
Unless it gets your career advanced.
Instead - a job and mortgaged house,
Some whinging kids and thankless spouse.

But wait – your wasted youth is not yet done,
We still have this one night for fun:
So eat and drink, be merry and bold -
For by tomorrow you’ll be too old.

I really liked your previous poem, but this time William Crustacean has logged in using your moniker. I.e. he doesn't know what poetry is for.

Was this honestly intended to be appreciated?

thanx psd. I thought in my "add a letter"-method I found a way to stay young forever, now i know that i can't do anything than admit that i am old... and switching to 20d) doesn't help, as it would give me problems buying alcohol in some countries...

I like it, PSD! I'd be very amused if I got it on my birthday.

I feel "With your girlfriends in someone's room" has a syllable too many - take out girl, maybe? And I might change the And at the beginning of V1 line 3 to another Time...

hee.

Not bad as a poem, but I fail to see why she should stop wearing short skirts and chatting to her friends, just because she's now reached the grand old age of 21. Did you grow up suddenly and start acting like an adul when you became 21, PSD ? Is that a stupid question ?

I liked it. Take note: This is porbably the only time you will EVER see me compliment PSD.

Wait, Kaz!

The "porbably" can cancel it out

I like it.

I was going to edit that out, but I think I'll leave it now. Thanks, Intrigue :)

Hey, who says 20d is old? I'm 39, and I'm not old! In fact, my mum is 65, and she's not old either. It's all in the mind, I tell you. :-)

My Grandma's 94. Is that old?

She takes it well. She's worked for St Vincent de Paul for 40 years.

Is Granny Next old as people are old?

I was talking to a neighbour when I was young enough to get away with such statements, and told her I was impressed that at her age she was still determined to get on with life rather than giving up.

"Ah, my brother-in-law, he's nicely given up," she grinned. He was 65, and she was in her eighties.

This is not to say that many could not reasonably be asked to try to cope; but some do, and some don't.

I'm not old. :) I guess I therefore have no place in this discussion, right?

Is St. Vincent de Paul any relation to Lynsey de Paul?

Well Sarah B, you could comment on the problems of the old from an unbiased point of view ---

Old age is where a broad mind and a narrow waist exchange places.

Though I wouldn't want to say when old is... I always thought old was when your age was in triple figures...
