The joys of self-reference

It is impossible to determine whether this sentence is true or false.

Thoughts, anyone?

Sounds true to me, Sarah. Or does it?

I contend that if it's false, this can be proved, but if it's true, then it can't.

It looks true or false to me. Is it?

Is it possible to determine if it's actually a sentence?

Sarah _

I had to think about this for a few minutes, 'Logic' not being my best field of thought, but now agree with your interpretation of the situation.
It reminds me of that old SF cliche, used to make various over-logical robots & computers self-destruct in frustration, "This statement is false".

Yes, it is similar to that statement, but in other respects it is also similar to the statement "This sentence is true". Take the three statements together and a pleasing symmetry begins to emerge, though it is indeed a trifle brain-boggling!

Sarah, my brain hurts now. It's much too early for me to have to work that hard. Especially after a long night in the gutter.

As long as it was a good night...

The gutter is still suitably free of ginger cats, I trust?

Yes Sarah, no ginger cats in sight last night. Although, I did distinctly hear a cat fight going on. Not sure who the participants were but I believe it's safe to say Klinsmann wasn't one of them.

Yes, the evidence here suggests that he hasn't recently been in a fight. He isn't swaggering around looking even more arrogant than usual, and he isn't nursing any injuries.

Here's an even more brain-aching piece of self-reference which has just occurred to me:

"If this sentence were true, it would not make logical sense."

Warning: do not take sentences like this into the gutter!

Sarah, my poor brain can't handle all this this morning!

Glad to hear Klinsmann shows no signs of injury.

H'mmm, so it wouldn't.

Although actually...

Wouldn't whether that was so depend on the meaning which was ascribed, in this particular case, to the word "it"?

OK, Tracy - just for you I shall not post any more brain-twisting sentences this morning (your time)! :-)

I was trying to think what they reminded me of, and it was

Of course the statement could be neither true nor false...
