well, just found Jon's blog (and very entertaining it was too...)

Anyone else got one they'd like to share?

Anyone wants a look it's at [www.livejournal.com]
which name I took with pride, since it was the Panjandrum himself who bestowed it upon me. (And I like the song .... we used to sing it at school).

Um .... you might find some of the content familiar. Never waste good material.

always fancied writing a blog. May give it a go. Is LiveJournal free?

It is, but you have to be invited in by an existing member. As soon as I have been on long enough to have inviting privileges, I shall issue you an invite, if you like. Should be about 2 weeks, IIRC.

I've got a blog on www.blurty.com. I have the coolest username on the site - thursday_next, no less!

But please don't tell David. There is rather a lot of stuff in it about how I really, really don't want to get romantically involved with him.

well, there I was in the car this morning, pondering blogs and what I'd write in one, when what should be the first song I hear but 'Sloop Jo(h)n B' by the Beach Boys, which is none other than our dear Jon's handle for his blog.

Weird synchronicity type thing going on? Or mere coincidence?

You decide.

Morning everyone, btw.

Jon, I've just seen your blog and it's v cool. I've been meaning to start one for a while now - how easy is livejournal to deal with? And any chance of being invited by you to join? Not too tight to pay up, of course, but times are hard for freelance hacks at the moment! I've registered on Distributed Proofreaders, by the way - looks like a very worthy project and will be a useful diversion tactic when I can't deal with my approaching deadlines. More fun than fridgegrazing, even with Pickwick begging for marshmallows...

Speaking of Distributed Proofreaders, does anyone else think it's a good idea to set up a fforum team? Ideas for names please.
And hello! to the four or so new people I've seen today already.

fforum team? Time to form a croquet team! Has anybody got the faintest idea how to play it? And where do you order flamingos from?

I learnt how to play our world's version of croquet (without flamingos...) back when I was still at school, but haven't played it at all during the many years since then & have consequently totally forgotten the rules again by now.

Same here - my great-uncle (God rest his soul) used to have a croquet lawn, and when I was a little girl I was taught how to play. Blowed if I can remember, though. I spent many years of my life living in high-rise flats, and they're not the best place to play croquet.

I've never actually seen it played to any kind of rules. we were laways vaguely aware that they existed, but it was always much more fun to play a kind of militant golf...

I've got a tabletop croquet set, with little plastic hammers and hoops and marbles to bash around. (Haven't lost any of *those* marbles yet..) The hoops are set out in an inverted U with two more hoops in the middle, I think. It's a while since I played with it.
The idea is to be the first player or pair to bash two balls (or marbles) around the circuit of hoops. You get an extra stroke when you get a ball through a hoop, and also, I think, if you hit one of your balls with the other. (This talk of strokes and balls sounds increasingly dubious-what a shame the Carry On team never made a film with a croquet scene). There's plenty of opportunity for blocking your opponent and generally being rather sneaky.
I wonder if anyone's every marketed a croquet set with mallets made to resemble flamingos ? Given the popularity of Alice in Wonderland, we could be on to something here.

Rightyo, I've now checked the rules oout, and they seem to make sense. I think You're playing the golf version - it's the 9-wicket version that appeals to me, I think - much more violent with Roqueting allowed (this means you're allowed to hit the opponent's ball with a small, pretentious side-salad).

So, anybody up for a game?

Erm, one to the side, and two forward? Or was it two sideways and one forward? I forget. Did anybody else come to blows over whether the wassnames were castles or rooks?

I also used to hate Draughts, and would kick people out of the form room if they played it. That made me a draught excluder, arf arf!

When the roof gets put back on my house, you can come round and play tabletop croquet, if you like. It'll take less effort than playing on a real pitch, and I like to bake cakes to share with visitors.

And for other petrol-heads out there, I've got quite a lot of Scalextric track and two cars. Set it up last year and got a few mates round and we had a fantastic time. Cars went flying in all directions. Got even more fun when we let the cats in the room.... Diesel sat at the chicane and swiped at the cars as they shot past. Skiffle wandered across the room and sat *on* the chicane. When the cars flew off the track, it was a race between people and cats to catch them.

Anyone who thinks they're within reasonable travelling distance of Sheffield (UK), is welcome to come round and play

Don't tempt me... (he says, acutely aware that he's lagging in the Nectian meeting stakes)

Actually, a Nextian, all comers championship sounds like a good idea. We've got Scalextric, we can get croquet. There must be other literary games. We can have a championship!
