Today is Pancake Day, hurrah. Veggie fajitas followed by apple pancakes with ice cream. Yum yum.

But enough of this shrovery. There is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer a character called Spike. But to Englishmen of my generation there is only one Spike. Therefore action was required. Gentle readers, I give you ....

I would write a considered response, but after consideration my response was laughter, which was not considerate for my sister trying to sleep.

on the subject of pancakes, what are everyone's favourite fillings/toppings?

I suspect we'll have to go a long way to beat an attempt by Rob and myself...
Take 1 pancake. Place on it 1 slice apple pie. Place on pie lots of cream. Fold pancake. Eat. Repeat.

Last night I had mushroom in a blue cheese sauce for savoury and
Ben and Jerry's Full Vermonty (maple and pecan) with extra maple
syrup for dessert. Mmm...

Eddie and I made some. He's good at mixing. Also good at ladling pancake batter all over the bench and himself. We stuck to sugar on ours.

I like maple syrup...the real stuff from Vermont - thick and rich so no need for butter, not the fake stuff that comes in bottles shaped like fat mammies. I also like fresh huckleberries smashed up a bit and mixed with a wee bit of sugar and a hint of nutmeg. Deeeeelish!

Er... I'm hapless at tossing pancakes, and have been even since before my wrists went west. So I bought the cherry-filled ones from Iceland and put them in the microwave.

I know it's cheating. But they were nice. ;-)

I know there are some odd foods from all over the world...and I'm usually game to try anything once.

and then there's Vegemite...(and Marmite for that matter!!)

I've tried small tastes of both and the reaction my body had surprised me. It was similar to the one I had in 4th grade during International Food day when I tried Hawaiian poi. Did you know throwing up on one's desk can permanently damage your social standing?

Why anyone would want to eat something that looks like nasty toe fungus and smells like dirty gym socks is beyond me. But, to each his own, eh?!

(ps, have come to discover that I'm actually allergic to taro root! Perhaps my body was trying to tell me something!)

Once when we were in halls at Bath Uni, a German friend came back after a few beers as was looking for something to put on his toast. He came across Marmite which he hadn't heard of before and spread it on really thickly. We came out to see the cause of the commotion - coughing, spluttering and Teutonic utterances I couldn't begin to repeat...

oooh, vegemite is nice. Marmite is also v.nice. Eddie is also a big fan of marmite. Kate has been known to sit and eat marmite with a spoon....

The best use for Marmite that I know is as a thin layer under the cheese in toasted cheese... Not quite as good as a sprinkling of Worcester Sauce in that position, but not bad. It also goes quite nicely with peanut butter in sandwiches.

And mixes very nicely with the aforesaid peanut butter to make veggie gravy. Hang on, haven't we had this conversation before, or is it just the ex-ChronoGuard part of my character getting confused? :-)

Funny what the word 'vegemite' does to people....and I was (gasp!) lying about putting it on pancakes. I've seen someone put it on their face though. Apparently it burns the top layer of skin off. Hmm...and people pay beauticians a truckload of money to have that done.

iirc, you never *actually* said you put it on pancakes... you just said 'vegemite'.

Admittedly, anywhere else but the fforum and I'd make a link between the subject line and the content, but as going off-topic at the drop of a hat is practically de rigeur (is that spelt correctly?) round here, I try not to assume anything.
