Yes, prepping virtual pies with a wonky keyboard leads to all sorts of new flavours. You really must try the steak, kidney, cherry, chicken, cheese and onion pie, although that was caused by a shelf collapse rather than the keyboard.

The fires aren't making a pretty sunset for us... We don't get sunsets when it's this smokey, mostly because you can't see the sun. Hope you aren't to close to your states fires Kazzie.

No, they're well away from me, and the smoke has receeded now the wind has changed. Thursday last week was very smokey coz of the light breeze that was enough to blow the wind into our valley, but not enough to blow it out. We couldn't see more than a kilometre away, and considering the fires are about 150k away from us, that's fairly impressive.

Glad we don't get stuff like that around here.

Our neighbour decided to have a bonfire the other day. Well the main power source to the house(our house) runs beside their wall. There is a large plot of bamboo that is all dead there and the nut was burning the bonfire right underneath it. So we nearly had no power had the bamboo caught. Makes an impressive bush fire though!

I studied the same course as you (BSc Bio) and finished it about 2 years ago. I absolutely loved it – especially the fieldwork components! Now I’m studying a DipEd(Secondary) from home via distance education.

I basically grew up on visits to the Western Plains Zoo and have done lots of voluntary work out there since year 9 in school, spending most of my uni holidays either taking tour groups, working with the kids holiday program or volunteer keeping. Now I work in the zoo education centre on Thursday mornings, but I won’t be out there again until next year as I’ve taken December off.

Wow. Glad I found someone else interested in animals. I love them. My life is animals! I am just about to go away to Kariba for new year and have been guaranteed great elephant sightings due to the drought this year, I can't wait!

Next semester I am doing zoo, entos and bot. Am aiming for wildlife management in the end with a guiding and piloting licence. Should be fun.

What is it like at the zoo? I have actually never been to one. And from what I know of them they tend to be small cages so I don't think I could handle it!

This is in the centre of Melbourne... Nowhere near the fires! Very glad I'm not asthmatic.

I was down near Griffith for a wedding last week and the sky was mostly smoke haze, made for some great wedding photos on the river though - added a surreal quality to the background.

Western Plains Zoo is not a little zoo and it’s built with an open-plan concept where the animals are kept in spacious exhibits with little or no visual barriers between the animals and the visiting public. I’m probably a bit biased but I reckon it’s one of the best zoos around. I recommend that anyone who gets the chance to should come and visit (drop me a PM if you are going to and maybe we can do the tour thing).

Hmmm, I have only ever once been in a bush fire that blotted out the sun, that was at my old school in the gum plot at the back. The smoke was pretty serious too. All the borders were shepherded into the pool area and closed in. Meanwhile staff on the property in swimming gear tried to quench the flames with water from hoses that was barely a trickle... I have never laughed so hard in my life to see that!

Fighting a fire in swimming gear???? Excellent way to get third degree burns. Cover up, folks, cover up! All natural fibres and full arm and leg coverage. Cotten tea-towels are excellent for the head and can also make you look like Yassar Arafat if you choose the right one.

That photo looks pretty much as we had it on Thursday, BK. Our airport was out of service due to poor visibility, and I think I heard of the airports in Melbourne being in a similar situation one or two of the days as well. And it's only going to get worse as summer goes on.

If Yasser Arafat is your idea of high fashion....

Is a good point though. Also Why I tend to travel long distances in a long-sleeved shirt. Less chance of sunburn. ;)

Tonight the smoke has been all blown away, and we have a bit of cold weather for the next couple of days... They are talking about snow in the mountains... Bizarre!
4 days til italy. I'm supposed to be backing now but decided I needed a mental health break... Woo hoo!

Yes, we're going for a white Christmas, too. It must be a Third Year. We tend to get cold Chrissie Days every three years or so. The other two years are generally stinkers.

Don't take such a mental break that you miss out on packing, BK, and have a fantastic time in Italy.
