I would have to go with a "Harry Potter", as it's such a phenomenon across the globe right now, and it's a nice relaxing diversion anyway. I would also recommend "Dracula" by Brahm Stoker... it's not written the best, but conceptually, it's inspired a massive genre of vampire and supernatural fiction.

A more recent "classic" would probably be "The DaVinci Code"... or better yet, it's prequel, "Angels and Demons". They're both very conspiratorial, so don't take them at face value for what Americans will believe, but they express our culture of doubt and uncertainty, and a desire to be entertained.

Good luck to you!

Now, now BK. CK is new here and doesn't know the basic anarchic structure yet.

I don't think I would describe The Da Vinci Code as a "classic", though. A lot of the hard-of-thinking not understanding that it is a work of fiction is hardly the author's fault, but for me it would take more than massive sales and spin-offs to make it a classic.

Admittedly you don't say classic what, so perhaps I should not post this.

Whoops I did.

I'm not allowed to talk about that author anymore, lol. Not after the accident.

However, I still read the old Anne Rice vampire novels, which are not exactly high literature, so I'll behave!

Let us not limit ourselves to literature and/or classics!

It is fun reading pulp, as long as you know what it is. (Do I mention von Daddykins again? Probably best not to.)

50's SF!

It is just awesome. And ours will be just as strange in 50 years.

Ha! My brain is just mush at the minute (see the game goes on thread for the reason - cos frankly WHO CARES about stupid policy - I don't!) so I am reading "The Folk of the faraway Tree" which I think definitely merits the accolade of classic! I got books tokens for the annual year older celebration so (one friend at least accepts that they are the best present!) so I bought The Pinhoe Egg by Diana Wynne Jones, The Star of kazan by Eva Ibbotson, Magyk by angie Sage and Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke - one of the upsides of the course - go forth and read children's books! Don't know if they will be any good but should hopefully be quite diverting, was looking at Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, maybe next shopping trip?

About 10 years ago, 'Neverwhere' was a t.v series, which was nearly very good. If you do get the book, Nem, please let us know what it is like. (Of course if anyone else out there has already read it, I would be interested in knowing your thoughts.)

I like that - it was nearly very good, I am going to use that on slf evaluations in future - it was nearly very good! Can you use it in a more positive way - it was nearly very bad?
I really like that!

Just like "Gormanghast" as a TV series was *nearly* very good?
It was the sets and minitures that let that production down. Definately not the cast.

No, nothing like Gormenghast, which was very good, just not as good as the book.......

Neverwhere was... it was not bad and I enjoyed it. It was a very good concept executed quite well. Nowhere near Sandman, but a decent book. Maybe I was expecting too much?

That said, I would read it again should there be the chance. (My current list is way too long to make that likely soon....)

All in all, not the best book I have read, but better than many.

That was my feeling about Stadust, I liked it, the concepts were there it just didn't come together, its like he didn't want to make it too long for the sake of the reader but he didn't developm it as much as it could have been. Looking at the trailer for the film, it seems to be quite different from the book.
