Don't you just love it when someone gets a post in before yours ?

Want to talk to AAC about cats, but this thread is ridiculously long already, so I'm starting another.

BTW, an indiscriminate mass production type breeder of purbred dogs is called a "puppy mill" here, rather than a farm.

Guess what folks ? I've bought some more books ! I might be able to drop some off on my way through Sheffield to McCartney gig in Manchester, if it's still on. And only 2 days away !
TOTP2 Beatles special was repeated today to fill gap caused by resheduling. (Just thought that whoeveritwas - Dave ? - who missed it last time, might like to know he has had another chance to miss it.)

Books I bought today:

Miss Read - The Year at Thrush Green. Got most of her other books

Curious Customs of Sex & Marriage. Go on, convince me that *you* wouldn't have bought it.

Diana Wynne Jones - The Lives of christopher chant. Lovely paperback edition found for 50p ! 'A Real Wild Magic' highly recommended.

Joyce Grenfell - Letters to her mother 1932-1944. Longtime admirer of the great JG. got other books by her. "PSD, don't do that."

The Scouts - Time-Life book from series on history of the West. I've got a few others in series. Useful reference (but bloody heavy)

Might have bought Beatles anthology DVD set today, but nowhere to play it in Norfolk

Well, I managed to drop off about a dozen books back in Sheffield on my way to Manchester (have I mentioned that I've seen Paul McCartney live in concert ?). That just leaves another half dozen here in Norfolk.

While on way to Jon and Claire's lovely abode, we stopped to buy some booze. At least, they bought booze; I'd spotted a second hand bookshop next door.....
Pleased to find two hardback editions of pony books I have in paperback:

'A Pony for Sale' - Diana Pullein-Thompson. Pleased to get this as paperbacks are often slightly edited, even thought they don't admit it.
'Rosina Copper' - the true story of a remarkable polo pony who went on to become a show pony in her twenties and a celebrity.

Even more pleased when shop owner accepted the £7 cash I had on me, rather than insisting on total of £8.50 I should have paid.

Less pleased at being dragged away from shop when owner thought he might have a couple more pony books stashed away somewhere.

Didn't take time to stop in Sheffield on way back to Norfolk, so both books are here for a short holiday before finding their way to their true home. Stilll, I made a net gain on the Norfolk/Sheffield ratio.

Yes, well, while I'm sorry you didn't plumb the depths of the pony books in the bookshop, I'm damn glad I didn't get killed by a wife in a hurry. Next time you visit we'll send you to Uppermill (just down the road) where they have at least four second-hand bookshops ..... that ought to keep you quiet for a bit.

When we went away on summer holidays during my childhood my parents often felt it necessary to drag me out of the holiday resorts' libraries (with all of those different books that my local libaries back home didn't have...) and insist that _ if the weather allowed, and we weren't going on day-trips to places of interest _ I spend at least a couple of hours each day "playing" on the beach: Spoilsports, I thought that holidays were supposed to be about having fun!

Good grief, you don't know how much I can relate to that!

What is it about beaches that children are supposed to enjoy, anyway? To this day I don't greatly see the point in them unless there are interesting shells which one can collect and then go and identify using... yes, you guessed... a book.

I loved the beach. The beach is for building great big sandcastles with moats and everything, and for going swimming (not likely now at my age - the North Sea's damned cold !). Far too long since I last build a sandcastle

Guess what, boys and girls ? I went shopping in Norwich today.....

Only two books:

'The Midnight Horse' by Michelle Bates. 4th in the Sandy Lane Stables series. I've got number 1 already

'The Poison Principle - a memoir of family secrets and literary poisonings' Written by a chemist who happens to be granddaughter of a suspected poisoner.....

Got both from a stall on the market.

My first stop was at the Lakeland shop (we don't have one in Sheffield) where I had a lovely time browsing and looking at all the things I've seen in the catalogues. Came away with a couple of pressies, some odd stuff, like moulds for making chocolate mice (reduced to clear) and gadgets !
Two best gadgets:
Foldaway drinking cups - they pop up from their own container !
Expanding fish slice/turner - pull the slide back and a slice/blade slides out either side of the top one - cool.

bought a lovely mug with chinese horoscope animal (sheep/goat) on and got free fortune cookie. Haven't eaten it yet so can't tell you what oriental words of wisdom are.

also bought two handmade leather belts for £5 and about 3lb of pic n mix at 39p a quarter.
Norwich is *such* a great place to go shopping.

Things that beaches are good for:

1: Somewhere to plonk your board when you aren't surfing

2: Somewhere to provide access to water for surfing

3: Somewhere for adoring fans to watch you surf from (spot atheme here?)

4: Somewhere dry for a barbeque before, during and after the best surfing times

5: Somewhere to build sandcastles and sunbathe when there's no surf

6: Somewhere that defines rockpools, which are great fun to poke about in

I still love beaches...

I spent a small amount of money at the dogs tonight. I had four winners and tripled my money. i also got to see loads of bouncy greyhounds. Fantastic...

Aged Parents and I went to Lowestoft today. After a decent lunch at Captain Nemo's (no leagues at all under the sea), we went for a walk along the prom. There was some castle building and a boy had buried himself up to the waist in sand.
The best fun was watching four blokes doing something like kite-surfing. They stood (most of the time) on small surf boards and were towed along by kites rather like parascending chutes. The kites were attached to a body harness and controlled by a bar, rather like the steering mechanism of a hanglider.
One guy was just starting and hadn't even got into the water. He was being pulled about on the beach and jumped into the air now and again. Another was going nicely down the beach, but seemed to have some trouble turning around when the expert a little further out was already halfway back. We were speculating on his chances of ending up in Holland, but he got it right in the end.

"something like kite-surfing" - that would be "kite-surfing" then - yes, it really does exist and I want to play! I also want an off-road skateboard, having seen them in today's Sindy. i mean - how cool would that be?

(Unrelated to the author I was reading about who skates naked past hikers. He reckons that a naked bloke boarding past at 40mph, screaming "Get the plock out my way!" will add to their experience. I dare say he's right...)

Last weekend, while walking along the seashore here, I saw somebody on a patch of grass just inland from the beach who was kite-carting (if that's the correct term), i.e. using one of those parascender-type kits to pull them along & around in a sort of go-cart.

Can't remember what that one's called (are they kite buggies?). Whatever - I want to play!
