Jon: thanx for responding (and nice review - the pint is in the post).
Caught you out on Sheffield suburb though. Bramall is the name of a friend. The bit of Sheffield intentionally referenced is somewhere (and someone) else. Bit of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it though.

Beauchief Darrow. ;-) I still want to know if he pronounces it "Beechiff", like the Sheffield suburb, or "Bowchief" as you'd expect from a sheriff from "way down" somewhere. These matters are important, you see. If ever Minsky decides to take me into one of those books, I don't want to offend the good sheriff from the start by mispronouncing his name.

Minsky, by the way, sends his good wishes to all, and special purrs to Skiffle (because he knows she needs a good purr right now) and Ooktavia (because she hasn't been spotted around the Fforum for ages, so may be in need of purr herself).

Drat. I noticed Beauchief at the time, but forgot it. I remembered Bramall because football was on my mind at the time (if you call being held 2-0 by an Alpine village football).

Er... how can you be held 2-0?

Ah, that's better! (Er, not being held to 2-0, that is.)

Sarah.

Even Minsky would think twice before addressing Sheriff Darrow by his first name.

Thanks for the purrs

Got some work done today (Exclamations of surprise all round). Wrote that scene with the lovely bickering between Darrow and Hugh; references to Apocolypse not daring to start while Darrow's around :)

H'mm, yes, you have a point there!

How _does_ he pronounce it, though?

You mean you daren't ask your own character how he pronounces his name? ;-)

I know how you feel. I've written one or two like that in my time.

I've decided how Beachief is pronounced by the sheriff, but I'm not saying. It's part of his mystery.

I dare say if anyone halfway stupid enough dared address him by his given name, there's be a sharp intake of breath. Followed by a quick exit through the nearest dore. Still, look on the brightside, at least his name is distinctive.

OK, OK, I've got me coat already .....

Actually that was all from memory. I know Sheff quite well, as it happens.

Oh yes ? And for what nefarious purpose do you visit our Shiny Steel City ?
I can show you some excellent pubs (and even take you inside for a drink). When a friend has been chair of the local CAMRA for a few years, you get to know about these kinds of things.

I only know of one pub in sheffield, it served very strong beer in very small glasses. I forget the name. Surprisingly.

First Mainline are one of me customers. And South Yorkshire PTE are another one. So that's two nefarious purposes. Neither of them have shown me any good pubs so far ....

The Frog and Parrot used to sell it's strongest brew (Roger's Rocket Fuel, I think) in 1/3 pint glasses. It once held world record for strongest, regularly produced beer.
First pub to recommend in Sheffield is the Fat Cat, in old industrial area close to centre of town, but *not* a town pub. Old Victorian pub with small rooms (1 non-smoking), open fires in winter, daytime food, beer garden and pretty tortoiseshell cat. Serve own award winning beers, plenty of guest beers, scrumpy and guest ciders and more fruit wines than you ever thought existed. As well as most usual pub suspects in way of drink and snacks.
No jukebox, pool table etc. Just a bloody nice place to have a decently priced, excellent drink and chat with your mates.

Newer offshoot is the Devonshire Cat, just outside city centre in other direction. Similar range of drinks (but pricier). Good, all day food. Open plan with large tables ideal for playing Great Dalmuti or other card games.

What? And not 'The Forum' opposite Reading train station?
