Tank Books

How about this as a replacement for cigarettes?
As one habit dies hard, another takes hold.
The ban on smoking in public places comes into operation in the UK on July 1, 2007. Tank is launching a series of books designed to mimic cigarette packs –
the same size, packaged in flip-top cartons with silver foil wrapping and sealed in cellophane.
TankBooks pay homage to this monumentally successful piece of packaging design by employing it in the service of great literature. Cigarette packs are iconic objects, familiar, tried and tested, and over time TankBooks will become iconic objects in their own right. The launch titles are by authors of great stature
– classic stories presented in classic packaging;
objects desirable for both their literary merit and their unique design.
TankBooks are for people on the move, lovers of literature and connoisseurs of design. Try one and you’ll be hooked.

I am in no way affiliated with this, just thought you may appreciate.

So, I'm guessing War and Peace would be out as a future release?

I really REALLY want some.

But I sense that people will be tipping the books out and hiding ciggies in there when they go to the pub.

"No no, it's one of those books. See? Have you got any matches?"

Y'know I'm trying to lose the image of someone having invented books that are "read" by actually smoking them, without all that annoying looking at words going on.

With nicotine, as well!

Then again, it could be a totally new way of absorbing the literature... If it went to your brain as well.... BREATHING the books... Cool!

I wonder if exhaling would give you the same sort of thrill as turning the page?

But what about the dangers of passive reading?

You're in You get up to go to the loo and find yourself assaulted by the dim fog of a Phillip K Dick mindscrew! You'd have to find relief unsure whether reality itself in general and the urinals in particular are constructs around your perceived reality by some shady organisation.

Not to mention that passive reading contributes almost as much as actual reading to the probability of receiving Dan Brown's mangled prose and nonsensical history.

Second-hand reading! Even more powerful and dangerous than the original...

Would vanity/self publishing be classed as a hand rolled cigarette?

What about highly addictive authors? Would they classify as a banned substance?

By the way:
Catch 22...

very bad idea....

I was so taken by the idea I popped out to Borders at lunchtime (the only book chain currently to stock Tank books) and bought a couple.

They are just as advertised, a beautifully designed cigerette pack with a small paperback (well, no real covers to speak of) inside the foil lining. I almost didn't want to break the seal of the cellophane, as they are such lovely objects, but felt that I just had to, to inhale the scent of Hemmingway's prose style. Very heady!
