I have a part of book about how they translated the Asterix characters names to English. Will attempt to dig it out as well.

Thanks for all the recommendations - I shall look out for those. I have a copy of the Discworld Companion somewhere within reach, so I'll hunt through that for references on translation and names. Any others, please keep them coming. Authors' thoughts on names, their importance, and translation issues are particularly interesting...

What the heck are Echidnas?

Hello, I'm new. I live in Melbourne, but come originally from the heart of Thursday country - Swindon.

Echidnas are monotremes (egg-laying mammals) - there are two species, one in Australia and one in PNG. The only other monotreme is the platypus. I have a photo or two up here: [brizbunny.com].

Help yourself to pie. You are lucky: there is rabbit pie in the savoury selection. You can recognize it by the fluffy tail poking through the crust, or if you want it cooked, look for the pie with the blackened skuzzball on top of it.

Of course there is also a selection of sweet pies and I am sure someone will bring some deep fried Battenburg soon.

Deep fried Battenburg? Now there's an idea... The marzipan would go well with the crunchy batter, I'm sure...

Or savoury battenburg: two squares of black pudding, two squares of chicken, stuck together with sausagemeat and wrapped in pig rind, then deep fried.

The traditional combination hereabout would be bloodwurst (more or less the same as black pudding) and liverwurst, served hot with mustard. Can you do marzipan from mustard seed?

Perhaps we could mould Leberknoedel around the squares as the marzipan equivalent?
