I love making maps for my books and roleplaying games. I believe there's software available for making maps for RPG's which would probably be @#$%& than the professional stuff, although it might not be the quality you want.
Might not have the right symbols either. Are you likely to need 'Here be Dragons' ?

What you need is ARC/INFO - best GIS program going, and a snip at a grand and a half. Dammit.

I've used some pretty nifty mapping software in my time ... I remember when we got mapping software to show all the bus stops in Manchester. The grid refs had all been entered manually, so of course when translated to the map many of them were well out. We had - two stops in the middle of the runway at Ringway Airport, one stop dans la bocage in Normandy, and one in the Libyan desert. All of which are more attractive locations than Ordsall Estate in Salford. Possibly the stops there were all wrong as well, but nobody dared go and find out.

Sounds like the infamous map of Britain in the Call of Cthuthulu 'Green and Pleasant Lands' supplement. We were most puzzled to see the highlands of Scotland located somewhere near Braintree.

Btw, just as info, Carla showed up here for 1 week, that's why she hasn't been posting ehhehee

And she hasn't bragged to me yet, so i don't think she's got one copy....

Hello everyone - I didn't take my copy to France so I only managed to start it at the weekend. I'm half way through - taking it steady as there is such a lot to take in. Mr Fforde just improves with age. The puns are getting worse and the plots are getting better.

I have to say that it is Absolutely Brilliant, exceeding all expectations (which were great - ha ha) and Miss Havisham is afraid of semolina.

PS - just found a Views of Swindon postcard lurking in the middle pages!

well, no cards on my proof... i'm on page 229 now and I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO BLOODY WORK.

so the person sitting on the grass in soho square at lunch time lost in a (good) book is me... oh wait, i'm meeting a friend for lunch today, so that's 1 hour less of reading, ahhhrgh
and i've got things on tonight and tomorrow so i don't think i will have it finished before the weekend... bah!

BTW how did you manage to get the signed proof? where do you work? unfortunately i didn't see the bookseller till lunch and by the time i called they were all gone.

I work for BookScan out in Farnham and for once The Bookseller arrived on the Friday - we're part of the same company as The Bookseller but often don't get our copies until the Monday!!! How stupid is that? - so I was on the phone at 8.40am leaving my details!

So how did you get your proof? Where are you working? Soho Square - Bloomsbury? If so, any chance of HP5?

I'm supposed to be but every now and then, I pick the book up, read, laugh, puzzle and then do a bit more work and then pick the book up, read etc. On page 159......

I work in the Marketing Department of Books etc (charing cross road - on top of the Borders there). Proof heaven... well the ones the others don't want, i'm still kind of low in the department.

i wish i could get a HP 5 proof! all we got was a black mock up so we could weigh it to see how much it costs in postage! i still say it's invisible ink but no one wants to let me try and read it!

*Well* *Next* time I'm in London, we ought to discuss what we thought about the book!

I get quite a few proofs sent to me here - also quite a few publishers will send me a copy of whatever if I ask nicely. Eight books on my desk currently waiting to be read, a further 6-7 at home plus the ones I had started before TWOLP came along.

Just read The Birth of Venus and was completely blown away by it - miles different from the output of Mr Fforde but would thoroughly recommend.

I lost count of things I have waiting to be read. Transworld actually sent me a bound manuscript of a book because they didn't have any proofs! That will be next on my list (mythical fantasy - ireland 2000 years ago... totally up my street)

I get the market shares reports every week from you guys. Phil Mead is the person I email when I need anything from BookScan.

woooooooooooooooo Finished!!!

and just as i was drifting to sleep the Password just came to my eyes, i was so BLIND all through the book! (and no, blind isn't the password, i wrote in caps for emphasis)

It's brilliant but I won't spoilt it for anyone, i'll just say it has moments of pure genius like a Spam / Junk footnoterphone message!

More when you all have read it or when Jasper created a forum for the book and i can write there without people peeking.

Hope to finish lunchtime - the sun is beckoning so I may walk down to the river and sit and read whilst munching a sandwich.

Think I know the password but will have to wait till the end and then go back to check on a couple of bits

And don't say we are teases... it's a thread called the well of lost plots... don't read it if you don't want to know things...
