I now own a copy of Jennifer Government! went into Minotaur and found it. Was tossing up between that one and A Scanner Darkly and The Galactic Pot-Healer by P. K. Dick. Decided I'd do more research first. I liked the film of A Scanner Darkly, and have heard good reviews about the book from people, but has anyone read the Galactic Pot-healer?? As an artist with an affinity for certain silaceous materials I thought it looks like an interesting read.

Sounds interesting. I wonder if it refers to metal, ceramic or herbage?

from wikipedia:

The protagonist, Joe Fernwright, is a pot-healer, one who can perfectly restore pottery to brand new condition. Joe finds himself constantly depressed and idle at the opening of the novel. He is unemployed and on a war veteran's social security benefit, given that ceramic pottery has been replaced by plastics, and his profession is not in great demand. He longs for purpose and meaning in life.

That was just what I was going to say (maybe).... maybe not. Robert: do you know anyone who has read it?

I've never heard of it. That's why I quoted part of wikipedia's summary. Phillip Dick has a good reputation - particularly with short stories - but that doesn't mean that every book is going to be a gem.
A story about someone "looking for a purpose in life" sounds more like a pot-boiler than pot-healer, to me.

Oh... Actually, I *have* read that, I think. A while ago now though. I wonder who I borrows it from!

Philip K Dick wrote a pot-boiler??? I'd think it more likely to end up being about a different kind of pot! I've read good and bad P K D stuff. Apparently his best stuff was approx mid 60s to early 70s (info courtesy of the bloke at minotaur).
Do you remember anything about it Kitten?

Not particularly. I just remember thinking "Oh, that's just that 0-level spell 'mend' " because I'm a pathetic geek.

I read Galactic Pot Healer by PKD a loooooong time ago. (Probably 20 years ago!) As far as I remember, it would appeal to anyone who liked "The Man in the High Castle" and even though SF is closer in feel to his non-SF novels.

Man in the High Castle was.... interesting. Sounded a lot better than it was, but maybe I need to re-read it.

I like The Green Hills of Terra though, Rhysling's story.

Heinlein?

I recognise the name Rhysling, but not the title. It looks like another visit to Planet Google.

By the way, did you hear I have some jewellery going in at Flinders?... Oh, and those were RPG references before- esp Dungeons and Dragons.)

That is cool! You must show me the sort of stuff you have there.

Who wrote The Man in the High Castle? Sounds interesting, worth reading?

Green Hills of Earth was both the title of the story and the paperback it came out in in the 1960s (in OZ)

BK,

What have you got going into Flinders, and which Flinders, and when?

<have just noticed colloquialism of 'in in' in print. That will stuff up the NSA and its minions - with luck>
