Gully Foyle in WOLP

I'm new to the Fforum and MuseSusan invited me over here from WOLP.

I posted a note in WOLP topics about this character from Alfred Bester's "The Stars My Destination" appearing fleetingly during the awards meeting. He offers to help Thursday control the rowdies, and then recites his own classic lines from his own novel:

"Gully Foyle is my name
And Terra is my station,
Deep space is my dwelling place
and death my destination."

But in the novel, his last line reads "And the stars my destination," which is, of course, the title of the book.

The major premiss of the "Stars..." text is that teleportation has become possible, and characters can "jaunt" from place to place to place, much as TN and her colleagues do from place to place, book to book, and time to time, except for those (like TN) who need additional training and instruction.

Anyone else familiar with Gully (Gulliver) Foyle?

Dennis

No, sorry! Worth a read?

Actually "death my destination" is the line for most of the book: Stars only appears near the end. I read TSMD last year, but haven't read it again since.

Woah

Blast from the past! I can't remember much of that book, I must admit (I was young, and it was far too dense- or rather *I* was far to dense, to appreciate it) but I do remember the re-appearing tattoos. I wonder how you'd go about getting some...

Oh, and welcome.

Someone will be along in a moment to offer you pie, marzipan or tea and scandal.

I'll have a scandal please.

And I have that book somewhere I am sure.... Need to read it again actually. Think I did not finish it last time.

Well, if no-one else will offer Dennis some pie, I will.

Help yourself! The game pie is nice. (It has a big "S" on it 'cos it is savoury)

We also have some leftover wine if your taste and local age limitations allow.
