spoiler alert: "The Dark is Rising" movie

Was anyone else appalled by the recent movie of "The Dark is Rising"?!?!?

I left the cinema in tears after watching 90 minutes of desecration!!!!

I was utterly speechless and completely inarticulate! (I have since recovered my vocabulary but not my composure.)

It has taken three months of therapy and a re-read of the entire series for me to calm down.

What were they thinking?

I saw the trailer and thought I could remember a book by that name, but didn't quite believe the movie might have been based on that same book. I read a few reviews very similar to yours and decided to sit this out.

What were they thinking? Apparently that no American would want to watch a film about an English kid of about 11 years who learns magic. Oh and that their target audience wouldn't know who Merlin or King Arthur are.

What they were thinking that with is another matter. It's obviously not brains

Um... Spoiler space needed? (For those like myself who haven't seen it... Or possibly a change of title, eg, one that mentions the movie title so people know to avoid it if they plan on seeing it?

Oh know! I knew IT! I love those books, and the moment I heard they were making it into a movie.. and out of the sequence I knew it would be all wrong. I guess I'll not spend my money at the cinema, wait till it comes out on TV and then cry.
^_^ I think we should all become book-to-film dictators and make sure that all films based on books are done the way they should be. Anyone agree?

This looked like an especially egregious buggering of a beloved classic.

I read an interesting and scathing review here -- [www.avclub.com]

The comments are fun.

Changing the subject: a Fforum tradition since 20--! (Although not perhaps in the way you meant.)

I just did a little backtracking, the comments from an earlier post on TDIR make me feel so mad with American film makers and companies! I'm glad I didn't waste my time and money going to see it, I know from the description I would be in tears.
Making Will into an American called Ludwig??????? With no connexion whatsoever to the book, sad to think that Susan Cooper is connected to the film (however tenuously) and that people will think her book are like the film.....

Also I discovered that other people have read the three Investigators! Fancy that, I only read one and thought no one had ever heard of them. Perhaps they weren't popular over here....
