I have decided that if I never hear the song "Play That Funky Music White Boy" again ever in my life, then maybe I can die happy. I think maybe I say this just to get responses that will then drive the darned song out of my head forever?? Help me fforum, you're my only hope...

I believe that there is only a certain number of times the human brain can be exposed to those sorts of songs.
Once the limit is reached the brain explodes.
I have nearly reached that point with "Hotel California" anything by the eagles and fleetwood mack and for the aussies out there "Absolutely everybody" by vanessa amorosi.

<must go can hear ticking in my head. TURN OFF THE RADIO!!!!!!!!!>

I lived in residence for my first year of university, and selected a room on the "quiet" floor. Unfortunately it was also the ground floor, so the people on the first floor had no such restriction. It was the year of "Achy Breaky Heart" and line-dancing and what memories survive of that year are coloured by the sound of boot-clad feet stomping on my ceiling...

Heehee, My gran was Vanessa Amarossi's teacher, and her mum goes to her church.

See! I'm almost famous!

*applauds and bows down before Kitten*

Hmmm... I do not really suffer from this. Although having four wildly differing songs running through your head at the same time does not help.

I know someone whose earworms are Welsh chapel songs. In Welsh.

Really? Welsh sounds gorgeous though... How can that be an earworm?

This is what he told me.

But I think that having obscure Welsh hymns on permanent loop might get to be a bit much....

So sorry- "HOTEL CALIFORNIA" was my class song for some insane reason- we live in AL, hello?

But guess we got lucky- it could have been *shudders* "SWEET HOME ALABAMA"...
That one's on my list of songs that shouldn't be played in public by punishment of death!

Yes! Have that problem a lot, mostly the Boosh's little songs like the tundra song on the the stickleback or soup songs.
John Clark's gumboot song and some Primus songs are also infectious.

I always have music on in my head, real or made up. I don't particularly mind it, but it does mean that if I'm anywhere where there's music playing, it sounds like listening to two differently tuned radios at once.

Anyone read "Musicophilia" by Oliver Sachs? It has quite a fine part about earworms and suchlike.

Oooh, Zen, I feel for you! I agree on the Hotel California thing although "Life in the Fast Lane" is catching up fast.

Barnardine, my local library has that book, I am getting it.

I lived in the Animal House in Streatham (South London) in the late 1970's and for some reason I cannot espouse the favourite song of nearly all the others was 'Hotel California'.

Given that we we all into excessive drinking, late nights, no social responsibility - all being colonials - it seemed that whenever someone came in the tape player would begin playing Hotel California. I listened to heaps of Bartok, Stockhausen and others of their ilk for years to quell the dreaded HC.

The only respite period was 7pm on friday Nights when 'The Muppet Show' was on, and that tune would occupy the common consciousness. What would Jung say? Apart from 'turn the bloody thing off'?

I think he'd be passing it to the left.
Sounds like a crazy fun!

Martin, are there any Welsh hymns that are not obscure?

I dunno. We only sing the one, and that is translated.

I have this long list of songs that should never be played again- unfortunately, it only exists in my head... so far...

I was reading this book the other day where these tourists from Belguim were playing "Bohemian Rhapsody" & the serial killer goes up to them & says
"No, no, no! That song is illegal in this country. You must now go to your rooms & await instruction."

FLORIDA ROADKILL- Tim Dorsey, if you're interested...

That one was on my list for a while, too!

Zendao,

Old joke:

Q: Do you have a criminal record?
A: Yes. Max Bygraves singing 'Deck Of Cards'

<two white pills for that memory>

Give us you list of songs that should never be played again:

As an incentive I'll give you a starter:

The Who - My Generation*

* I don't dislike The Who, and strangely enough, at a party in Richmond I met two female ladies one of whom was a secretary for 'The Who's management organisation. She told us stories about the band. The other was a tall brunette divorcee and I saw a lot more of her.

That Spongebob squarepants song. I heard it but once, never again!
Wow, you met two female ladies?

The Chicken Song - Spitting Image
Every so often than gets lodged in my head, and Aussies just don't understand.

"Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet ......"
