I am very sorry to all the fans, but I have not been able to finish my first Pratchett....

Well, which Pratchett was it? You know some of us will be telling you you should have started with a different one.

Bad choice! CoM is not a good book by comparison, I never finished it.

Should have started with Small Gods…

Or Pyramids. I've always liked that book without really knowing why. Maybe it's the 2-D (or was it 1-D) pyramid builder son?

I said the CoM before, and after a re-read recently I must say that it wouldn't be my first choice. I would probably recommend Equal Rites or Mort now.

Small gods is an acceptable second, as the first introduction.

Good grief, NEVER Hogfather.

Hogfather wasn't bad! I wouldn't start with it, since it goes after Soul Music, but it was a good one.

But Pyramids requires you to be trained in the Pratchett way of thought.

Start with one of the Witches stories which makes background references to the discworld then add to your knowledge by reading other stories.

But don't start with Thud

I just don't like Hogfather (especially as a start) as it was part of the bloated pagecount period, after the super-consistent phase and before the highly erratic period we're in now.

Of course, in the Japanese and Chinese versions you start at the bottom right.

Strange how we differ: what ES describes as the "highly erratic period" is to me "still hugely funny but has more going for it than just that" period.

I agree, though that Hogfather would be a terrible place to start.

And Annie, it could just be that you will never connect with TP's books. don't worry I still find JKR tedious and can live a happy life not bothering to read them.

perhaps we need venn diagram of persnal reading tastes.

Then we could see who matched up best with whom, and thus allow for differing value judgements.

Good idea, but can we do it with pies instead?

My pie would be blackcurrant (warmed but not overly hot) to be consumed with rich smooth vanilla icecream and whipped cream.

Damn the calories and myocardial infarcts.

Does this match anyone else's pie preference?
