Romance of the Thursday

Interesting text message from my sister, who just finished First Among Sequels...

"My only wish is that he would write better romantic dialogue."

Thoughts? Jasper? Mari? Any defense against this? Because now that I think about it, I tend to agree...

But who really does use romantic language in real life? Aside from being silly occasionally to each other ^_^ (this is a girl's perspective here).

"How I adore you, oh heart of my lettuce." JFf is better at it than I...

I thought Thursday & Landen's romance was very refreshing and didn't really need any overtly romantic dialogue. Landen's first-person bit in Something Rotten was plenty romantic enough for me.

I think that this is a good time to quote the Dryad from Warcraft 3:

"I shall now emulate the human mating cry: I'm so wasted! I'm so wasted!"

I do not think many use overly elaborate language. Maybe a couple pet names, not much else.

That was beautiful.

Occasionally, I call my bf "cupcake" but that's just because he eats so many of them, I'm afraid he'll turn into one!

Right, I'll join OZZY in saying goodbye to romance...

My better half thinks I think that romantic language means Romany the speech of the gypsies.

For me, romantic language is: 'Do you want the last piece of chocolate?'

That is more meaningful than 'shall I compare thee to a summer day' which around here means sunburn, sweat, dead plants, water restrictions, huge electricity bills for running the airconditioner, and short tempers as everyone is inside and there's conflict over what DVD/Video/book reading will prevail.

You're shaking my confidence, people! I'm planning a parley into romantic language and now doubt is upon me! Maybe I could get Egon5 to take over...

Be not disenhearted.

You got 9 posts with a mention of food.

You have broken the existing record by about 35%

I have mused upon the fact that mant Oriental names have the faminl name first , then the individual identifiers. eg, in Vietnamese culture the names begin (35% of the population) Ngyuen (pronounced NWIN) ... .....; which is one of the old royal family dynasties).

Applied to western European names it made me wonder if EgonSpengler was related to EgonRonay and ultimately to the parodic EgonToast. Just a thought.

Ah, but Egon Spengler was names after Oswald Spengler. Any cultural morphologists out there?

Pancakes.

'Oswald Spengler' rang a bell, although it is not reported if he was a tintinabulist. However the first entry when Googled reads:'After Decline was published in 1918, Spengler produced his Prussianism and Socialism in 1920, in which he argued for an organic version of socialism and...'

I got as far as 'organic version' and Barry, the time travelling sprout appeared unto me.

Reading Google further I came upon: 'Photo of Spengler's Rock Whelk A distinctive feature of the shell of Spengler's Rock Whelk are the pairs of brown-red lines between the spiral ridges in the ...'

Now that is romantic language. How many of us have been able to come up with sentances like:' Your paired brown red lines in your spiral ridges enliven my soull and uplift my thoughts.'

Romantic, like love, indigestion and chocolate, is where you find it. It is a value added concept, not that the taxman takes 15% of the gross, and any given set of words may or may not be romantic given the circumstances and individuals by and to whom they are being uttered.

Except of course :'Do you want the last piece of chocolate'

All hail BAH-REAH...

I have to admit that I cheated. I only know Oswald Spengler from the Ghostbusters reference and the appendix at the back of my copy of 'Cities in Flight' by James Blish.

Barry the time travelling sprout appears to you too? I thought that only happened to me when I was reading articles...

Romance is indeed in the emotions being conveyed by the words, although I'd advice articulacy superior to that of 'Gurgle gurgle wibble'.

Wibble.

As opposed to Hah-Naah, the Celtic goddess of all things mathematical?

I've often called on BAH-REAH, kneeling over the porcelain altar, and he never fails to materialise. His consort RUU-UUTH has also provided relief in times of distress.
