Where are you going?

What do mathematics majors do with their lives? (Genuine curiousness here...)

I don't know about EgonSpengler, but I intend to spend my life avoiding the real world as much as possible. That's right, I'll get my PhD, get a post-doc position, become a professor, get tenure, and then just sort of fuse into the walls of the math department, emerging only to terrify the occasional freshman calculus student and drink coffee. When I die I'll probably continue to haunt the halls of academia.

Ah, Muse, that is my plan too. Once this PhD is over, I intend to fly across the pond to somewhere in Canada, take up a PostDoc somewhere and never look the real world in the face again. Fortunately I've at least seen the real world a little so I won't end up like the worst of the Professors here.

Why risk reality if you don't have to?

Egon.

I see. Mathematician just integrate themselves into foreign societies like plasmids or some other biological entity. Or maybe they are the stem cells of the coming revolution?

I guess Martin's fate is just rock on.

Especially with cricket jokes.

Mine is looking reasonably rosy regarding job prospects. :)

Um ... Cleopatra's Needle? Although that's more of an elongated truncated pyramidal polygon, when you think about it.

We have a big wheel in London? Does that count?

Lets not speak up for Britain but rather for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

I don't know if Wales or Ireland get a good deal out of that suggestion...

Let's not discriminate on cricket grounds.

Quite right! Cornwall should get a mention.

Well...in Berlin an equally large wheel is in the process of being built. It will just stand on the ground where, during World War II, the largest air raid bunker/FLAK tower was situated.

I thought that the FLAK towers were still standing because they were so strong they could not demolish them?

Of the three big FLAK towers in Berlin, only the one at the Zoo was successfully demolished. The two at Volkspark Friedrichshain and Volkspark Humboldthain only partially collapsed after attempts to blow them up. They got (partially) covered with the rubble of houses destroyed in the air raids and are hills today.

The equally large towers in Hamburg and Vienna still stand undisturbed. The difference is in part the distance they have to the next buildings and possible damages following a big blast. The Berlin towers stood in the middle of expansive parks.

Thanks PrinzHilde,

They must be pretty spooky places?
