If Hitler had won the war
Posted by: Jazz_Sue (---.bb.sky.com)

Just wondering if I'm the only person here who reads the Daily Mail. Saturdays are usually pretty good for essays etc, and today's is particularly relevant - Ian Kershaw (one of Britain's leading historians) imagining what would have happened if Hitler's tanks had destroyed the allied forces at Dunkirk. 'Churchill in exile. The Duke of Windsor back on the throne. Mosley in the Cabinet. And our empire grabbed by the Nazis ...'

As opposed to being grabbed by the nadgers, which is what happened when labour took over, but still ... thought this was of especial relevance to all us Thursday-worlders. The Mail has a web page, by the way, for all those further afield than Blighty.

That's a dirty trick, Jazz-Sue! any direction to anything to do with the Daily Mail should carry a health warning.

Is all I have to say

I would read the Daily Mail, I do like the reporting in it, I just hate the editorial tone that nothing good has been invented since 1953

Hey! I was invented in 1958, thank you very much. And sometimes I've been very good indeed.

Jazz_Sue, do you have a curl in the middle of your forehead?

Or

When you were good you were good, but when you were bad you were terrific?

If Hitler had invaded Britain in 1942 do you think he would be through Customs yet?

Or have all his luggage?

If Hitler had won the War...

The Daily Mail would have become the national newspaper! It'd have been the official Nazi rag, seeing as how the editor at the time thought Hitler was such a great guy...

Well, OK, so they withdrew support for the Nazis after the invasion of Prague...but that might have had something to do with supposed threats of enforced closure by the Government if they carried on supporting them!

It just all seems a little ironic that the Daily Mail should be the ones publishing the article, to me. Even if they're not that way any more, you might have thought they of all people wanted to not revisit that era...except I'm guessing they made no meniton of themselves at the time?!

Okay, okay, I admit it - I do it because of the Garfield strip cartoon, okay? Yes, I know he's also in half a dozen Sunday supplement pages that have got 'Socialist Republic' written all over them. But I'm a tightwad, and besides I'd rather read some half-decent written English, than waste time trawling through pages of motorised wheelchair and so-realistic-you-could-puke-your-brains-out baby doll advertisements.

Good, Bun? Oh yes, I come wif a curl in the middle an' everyfink and I'm yours, to keep an' play wif forever for only £199.99 plussix furthermonthlyinstalmentsofsamewrittenintinylittlelettersyoucan'tseesoyouthinkyou'regettingarealbargainpleaseinsertbankaccountdetailshere.

Garfield is semi OK.

He has SS trooper like attributes in relation to the pursuit of his ends regardless of the effects of those actions on others, so maybe Garfield is the right carytoon for the paper.

The fact that Opie is as thick as two planks only strengthens the effect as he emulates the British parliament of preWW2 Britain.

Nope, sorry. I tried reading my parents' copy of the Daily Mail and I still can't find this half-decent English of which you speak! We will have to agree to having different tastes on this one.

interesting point about the invasion though. Would it have succeeded? Even if it had, by now would we be back to roughly where we are, anyway?

I should have added, I don't do philosophy, phd mathematics equations, or the rewriting of quantum physics principles. I struggle over words with more than seventeen syllables. I am not like you guys.

I should also have said, Fred Bassett for President.

Point is, yes I voted Tory to annoy my parents, I buy the Mail because it annoys my mother and besides, I read it mainly for the animals. People are so damn boring, all that death and disaster ...

Aw, come on, the ducklings story was cute! Especially the bit where, having followed her offspring's progress through several miles of underground sewer,'cross roads, railways, and chinese takeaways, Mama finds herself and her babies 'rescued' by a well-meaning local with a fishing net and, for the sake of safety, transported to a nice safe location near ... Northampton airport. Cue: sound of rapidly escalating jet engines, loud surprised squawk in several octaves, sad little cloud of feathers cascading from rapidly extinguished jet exhaust ... Okay, so I made that last bit up, but do you see where I'm going here?

Maltese terrier story on Monday - sad and tragic demise of pooch, after being sucked into the workings of a road sweeping truck. Location: New York.
Maltese Terrier story Tuesday: Dog suddenly finds itself several million dollars worse off after the family of property billionairess Leona Helmsley contested the will. Location: New York. Tough little blighters, aren't they?

See, the serious, Socialist Republic papers have really boring animal stories, all about the demise of world polar bear populations and so on, whilst the Mail has ones you can put cartoon pictures to, even when there aren't any. Admitedly, you can do that with a lot of the human stories too, but I'm not THAT sick (Gordon Brown's exploding underpants - gaaaaahhhh)

:-) As I said differing tastes! I prefer differing tastes. can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone was like the inhabitants of this asylum?

No offence was intended.

Asylum! Ah, you got me there. Yes, the Mail does indeed want everyone to share its own views on asylum. And the Seekers, for some reason. Odd, 'cos they never get mentioned on the entertainment pages and I'm pretty sure it's not the group that are mad, just the people who still own the vinyls.

In my defence, I've also tried 'cartooning' the news stories in the Guardian and the Independant, but it'already been done for me.

Here in Melbourne we have a weekly struggle played out on the radio over Fred Bassett. Comic duo Hamish & Andy fight-out whether or not Hamish gets to read out a Fred Bassett comic live on air, usually under threat of physical harm. The cartoon reading itself is absolutely terrible, but the goings-on around it are good radio.

Hmm... Which station is that? I only really listen to triple j, but giggle til I snort when Hamish Blake goes off!

Dissimilar tastes: another reason not to listen to Triple J. I am an ABC Classical listener. Fewer raucous adverts and more subtle jokes. Especially like Emma Ayres.****

Not implying Emma A is a joke, just badly worded - should have writted 'I especially like Emma Ayres."

The decidedly mainstream Fox FM. With the advantage of having 2 hours of Hamish and Andy in drivetime.

Reading and viewing recent publications/videonews for the Uk it seems as if Hitler has got control of England.

Speed camera, street camera, right wing lunacies, street gangs, big business and a lack of accountability to shareholders and society, London council (by whatever name) etc. About the only thing missing are the old Milwall berserker fans.

It don't seem to be the same place any more.

It's not currently the most culturally advanced country, no, or the most secure, or indeed the most independent. There are still some good points though, just don't ask me what they are as I'll be gone after the studying's done. There must be good points...

Quick, someone speak up for Britain!
