well, finished WOLP, and am a little confused.

Surely not, I hear you cry...

Well, it boils down to this. Several of us got a credit for nominations in the Bookie awards, myself included. Yay me.

Except, when I read that bit, none of my suggestions were actually used.

So:
a. why am I in the credits, and/or
b. If Jasper is just thanking people for making nominations, then he's missed a fair number of people out, as several others made equally good suggestions in that thread.

No idea, but I'm in there so I'm happy.

I was even happier when I spotted my only decent joke from the last six months there as well...

don't get me wrong, I'm delighted to be there. It's just when someone asks 'So why are you there?' that I think will cause problems.

Suggestion and two questions;

Suggestion; maybe JFf was just thanking those who made the best suggestions ... but necessarily the ones used - after all, Jasper must have had ideas of his own, and as we know there were copyright issues.

Question one; what was PSD's gag?

Question two; who the hell is Yan?

1: Lady Macbeth. (An explanation: You're Scottish, you married a psychopath in a sporran, you never pass the Daz Doorstep Challenge, and you resound in the name 'Gruoch'. Open and shut case, yer 'onour)

2: Yan posted once with a list of suggestions and then disappeared into the ether from whence he came. Perhaps we smell.

jon: damn fine suggestion. I suspect you may be right. I may email jasper to ask him, for my own peace of mind.

Suggestion - could the credits where suggestions weren't used be thanking for 'deleted scenes'? Passages that had to be cut for reasons of space?

Hello one and all!

My, what discussions lurk down here! The 'credit' thing about the awards was to thank those who had troubled to respond to my demand for suggestions. Whether the ideas were used in the book is immaterial; it was for the effort to put finger to spacebar I was giving thanks to. As originally written, there were many more nominations.

And as you suggest, many of the ideas were cut out to keep the pace going. As Libris told me (before his arrest):

"There is nothing like extraneous detail to play hell with the throughput rates. Every week we have to go down to the Dickens Storycode engines with a high-pressure hose to blast out all the unread words that gum up the machinery. They are formed when readers skim the text y'know - one of the chief reasons for imaginotransference breakdown. Sloppy readers - Hate 'em! Won't be like that with Ultraword, I assure you!"

Sometimes I feel sorry for Libris. Not often, but sometimes.

in which case, my second point comes into play - there were more people made suggestions than were credited...

Having been in the position myself of thinking up credits to be included on the cover of something (in my case CDs and not books, but the principle's largely the same) I have to sympathise to a certain extent - it's really difficult to find the space to include everyone you might want to (and doesn't always make very interesting reading for anyone not listed or not likely to be listed either!). Compromises unfortunately often have to be reached, and who knows what hand made the "final cut" and reduced the list down to Scarlet, Yan, Ben, Carla, Jon, Magda, AAC and Dave when ideally I'm sure a large number of others might've been included had Jasper had his own way? As for Yan making one suggestion and then disappearing, that doesn't necessarily mean it's worth any the less. I just think it's really refreshing to see ANYONE get credited, and look forward to the next book merging reality and the cyberspace of the Fforum still further - I'm certainly going to make it an ambition of mine to post hopefully intelligent enough comments in future to earn myself a place in Book 4!

See? This is how nice Mr Ff is. More power to his keyboard.

Not literally of course. 2000 volts going through your fingers is liable to cause severe writers' block...
